Very educational and interesting read. This book will satisfy a very wide audience. Casual sports fans will enjoy learning about the common sports injuries within the context of some of the most well-known athletes such as Michael Jordan, Tommy John, Bernard King etc. Parents and coaches wanting to learn more about the common injuries in different sports will learn of strategies to potentially reduce the risk of injuries in addition to learning about the challenges of recovering from these injuries. Even sports medicine professionals (physical therapists, sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, etc.) will find this book very informative. For younger sports medicine professionals - those who may not be familiar with Joan Benoit, Hank Gathers, Tommy John, Bernard King, etc. - this book will provide you with a history of your profession, and will demonstrate how many of the treatments that we take for granted today, were once considered medical breakthroughs/milestones. What I enjoyed most about this book is the way Dr. Geier explains medical procedures and uses medical terminology in a manner that laypeople will understand. I also appreciated the way the Dr. Geier focused on EDUCATING his readers vs. using the book to state his own opinions on injuries and the potential dangers of playing sports. Rather, he presents his readers with the KNOWLEDGE needed to make informed decisions for their athletes.

This book is written for everyone. It is full of human interest stories that center around sports injuries, but even if you don't follow sports, you'll enjoy the book. I would highly recommend it.

My daughter wanted a Guatemalan cookbook since our ancestors and family are from GuatemalaShe saw the book in Amazon and told me about it but find it a bit pricey. I was curious but at thesame time ,since the book was write by an American author ,not a Guatemalan one I want to havea preview to see if he knows about Guatemalan cuisine. After a few pages I was fascinated with thebook,totally in love ,it was a Must Have even if it is a bit expensive.It is a great book. I order and itwas out of stock,well I order from somebody else because I have to have this book. Can't wait forit to arrive.

I had been searching thrift stores and Amazon daily for months, before finding a hardcover copy on Amazon for a paperback price of $20. Truly blessed. I love the book and will use it to cook many dishes for my Guatemalan husband and his family. This book will always hold a special place in my heart, as there are not too many Guatemalan cookbooks currently available. Get a copy... if you can.

What I really don't like about the book (in the Kindle Edition) is that there is no glossary or index. It's a royal pain to find the recipes in this book, but particularly with the Kindle Edition. The food, however, is nice and many of the recipes are very simple. I like it for that.

I found this wonderful book at our library several years ago and I am so happy to finally own a copy. Unlike many cookbooks with recipes that have not been tested, it is obvious the labor of love this book must have been. The Arroz con Pollo Guatemalan style is a superb dish and so delicious (and was easy to prepare in quantity). I love the recipes, the food histories of the Central American countries and the "Ingredients and Cooking Methods" section. The author does a great job in recommending substitutions available in American markets. If you need cooking illustrations, this book is NOT for you. Recipes range from simple to more difficult, but the directions are well written. Excellente!

I had this cookbook many years ago and lost it along the way somewhere. I feel like I have an old friend back since I replaced it from Amazon. I have gone to many of the villages and know the meals are authentic!

Love this book have know about it since a little kid when my step mother used to learn some Guatemalan recipe. I have wanted this book now that I am of age to cook, to make good Guatemalan meals for my family. I am a native of Guatemala but came to the states at young age, love it's food and want to cook more of the traditional Mayan meals. This book is just want indeed and more.Thank you for making this book. And Thanks a billion for making it an Ebook!

Very nice in presenting regional food of Guatemala. Was able to prepare a meal for folks from there. While their region was not in book, they were thrilled and satisfied. Will be using frequently as the cuisine is tasty.

This was all the recipes I was hoping for, I just wish there was more pictures.

Patrick Carr is a good writer. His prose was good. His characters make important decisions. They go through transformation. They are unique.The book progressed leisurely. Actually, it started out painfully slow, sped up a little, then really got going at the halfway point. It wasn’t, like, Fellowship of the Ring slow. It just sort of—unlike my books—wasn’t in a rush to get anywhere. Right, epic fantasy.Overall, I really, really enjoyed this book. It’s the sort of book that you can enjoy without getting emotional scars (see: Game of Thrones). I read the last 20% or so in a long sitting, not wanting to go to bed until I was done. I don’t usually do that. A book has to be actually good to keep me up like that. Therefore, by logical induction, this book was actually good.I loved the magic system. There were no fireballs and magic missles, but there was a truly fascinating system of casting lots whereby gifted individuals could determine the answers to any question they could properly formulate. It’s a well balanced system—powerful, but not overwhelmingly powerful. Makes for very interesting situations.The driving force of the book was the question: “What’s going on?” If you like the kind of book that drags you along by giving little tidbits of information (but not the whole story), then this is the sort of book for you.Training montages were also fun.Ale, boy!Maybe this bothered me more as an author than it will other readers, but some of the language got on my nerves. For example, the word ale. The word “ale” appears like 86 times on every page.Now, this is one of the reasons why writing urban fantasy is more fun than writing epic fantasy: you have more words open to you. I can use words like “booze,” “hammered,” “smashed,” “beer,” and “Budweizer.” Epic fantasy authors are stuck with…ale. Occasionally wine.So, something else that bothered me was that the characters, at times, were stupid. Like, not normal stupid, but stupid like convenient-for-the-author stupid. The main character, after over and over again being told to keep something secret, when he knows that people are trying to kill him, tells his whole life story. Like, more than once.Overall, though, I liked the characters. Not amazing, but good. The main charater is super annoying at the beginning but later awesome. Other characters, though fairly flat, were that sort of…enjoyable flatness. You know, like Gimli.Without spoiling the ending, I’ll say that I was a little disappointed. A lot was left unresolved, and the book felt a little incomplete. However, it’s part of a series, so I just have to read on. But this one definitely felt like it ended a little early.Religious undertonesThe Christian undertones in this book were done well, which is something I rarely say. I mean, the undertones are pretty strong: truine God consisting of a Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. A sort of medieval Catholic theocratic church, complete with “arch benefice” (i.e. pope). Demon possession, communion, and monks.However, it was done well—a very rare thing and difficult to do. I have no reservations recommending this book to people of a variety of faith backgrounds. Which I don’t do for all Christian books, mind you—some make me weep.But Carr did it well. Some people in the church are corrupt and evil, others are sincere and loving. Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. Kind of like real life. The sort of medieval Catholicism in this book actutally added some good flavor.

This is a well-written fantasy novel. The plot is interesting, and the fantasy world is carefully constructed and believable. The hero, Errol Stone, follows a somewhat stereotypical hero's quest, but with some unusual twists. When the story begins, he is the village drunk, pretty much wasting his life. But we soon learn that there is much more than meets the eye.The plot is complex with unexpected twists. The dialogue is good, and editorial problems are few. The supporting characters are well-defined.In fact, there is much to praise and little room for complaint. I only see two weaknesses. The plot bogs down, for me, in the middle. There seemed to be some repetitive events that did not advance the story very much. And the ending did not really resolve many of of the plot threads. Of course, there is a sequel, and that is to be expected. But a more satisfying conclusion would have been nice.

Mr. Carr did a good job of creating an alternate world within a world we all understand. I like that kind of fantasy. It’s sort of Piers Anthony without the slap-stick humor. The premise is – as is so often in fantasy novels because it works well – a run-of-mill village lad who turns out to be something else entirely, and the weight of the world falls on his shoulders. But the hero of this book is a little less than run-of-mill. It’s fun to read and watch as he develops into a character the reader can pull for, and speculate on just who he will turn out to be in the end. Which, of course, we don’t know as of the end of A Cast of Stones. One must continue the series with The Hero’s Lot to find the answer to that question. I’m looking forward to book two.

I thoroughly enjoyed this single-point-of-view tale. It begins with the introduction of a staggering drunk as the main character—a not entirely likable character, but the reader can sympathize with him—and journeys with him to his surprising new position in the world. This advancement doesn’t come to Errol Stone easily; he has physical and emotional demons to overcome while he’s being chased by poison- and blade-toting villains. He makes some incredible faux pas, and he also does exactly the opposite. There is a lot going on his world that he doesn’t know or understand. Carr handles the mystery well, and the reader learns as Errol learns. This doesn’t prevent the revelation of several subplots that keep the action and suspense going—and the story is wonderfully complex.The end is a little shaky, but not abysmal. It didn’t keep me from moving directly on to Book 2. The intriguing epilogue definitely helped in that respect.Criticisms? There are a few typos and confusions about direction, number, and who a character is talking to — enough to make me read the passages twice, but not enough (by any means) to ruin the story. The book does have a virulent case of Comma Splicing, which I find annoying in general but, again, not enough to ruin the story. And… naming conventions are inconsistent, with some taken straight from our world, some slightly modified (Morgols, Soedes, Basqu — and Finn Maccol), and some original. What was going on there? Did I miss something?Those nit-picking concerns aside, the book is a wonderful page-turner. Clean, gore-free (in spite of fight scenes), and an all-around good read.

Phenomenal book. It’s very hard to read about abuse. It is painful to read about child abuse. I didn’t have to struggle through this one; but, had it been longer, I might have. Draper is able to deliver a powerful story within 156 pages.This story focuses on Gerald, a player on Hazelwood High’s basketball team, and also from the first book, Tears of a Tiger. We get to start from the beginning with his character. We get to visualize the hell he’s been through his whole life, starting with his mother’s addiction to drugs. After she leaves him alone at the age of 3, there’s a fire that nearly kills him and he’s sent to live with his aunt. When he is a teenager, his mother comes back into his life on the same day that his aunt passes away. Things go from bad to worse for Gerald. He not only has to deal with abuse from his step-father, he learns real quickly that his step-father is sexually abusing his little sister. Gerald uses himself as a barrier between the two, and vows to protect his little sister.There’s so much drama going down in this little book! It’s not a long read, thank God, but you get way more than you think with these characters. I always wondered what would become of Gerald when I was re-reading Tears of a Tiger. There are stories that need to be told, but it’s up to the reader to brave it’s content. If you or someone that you know has ever been abused, both physically and sexually, then this book will be painful to read. I can say that I won’t be revisiting this book, simply because of the subject matter. The writing is flawless and filled with so much emotion. I will read Draper’s books all day, but this one I don’t think will make my re-read list.Recommend? Yes, especially if you have read the first book. This is also a book (series) that deserves more praise than it has gotten. Simply put, Draper is an amazing writer when it comes to African-American culture. She makes you see that things aren’t always as they appear, and misjudgments among society breeds ignorance from every turn. I for one, can’t get enough of her work. Highly recommend!

"Forged by Fire" is the second novel in the Hazelwood High trilogy by Sharon Draper, but one does not have to be familiar with the first novel to enjoy this one. Draper centers on Gerald Nickelby, a minor character in "Tears of a Tiger", and follows his progress from a neglected three-year-old to his junior year in high school. The story is powerful, straightforward, and honest. It is sure to resonate with a wide audience.As a three-year-old, Gerald is used to abuse and neglect. His mother is a drug addict who abandons him from time to time when she is strung out. However, one time while she is absent, Gerald accidentally sets fire to their apartment. By some miracle, he survives, and he is sent to live with his Aunt Queen while his mother serves time in jail. Gerald finally learns love at Aunt Queen's, but his newfound, sheltered and safe world cannot last forever. On his ninth birthday, Gerald receives the shock of his life - his mother is out of jail, has remarried the father of her second child, and wants Gerald to come live with them. My name is Austin. I am a 13 year old middle school student that read this book for my English class. This book is about a boy named Gerald and the ups and downs of his life. It takes place in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio in a low income neighborhood. The book from age 3 until Gerald is a junior in high school. It starts with him setting the house on fire by accident, while home alone. Because of this he goes to stay with his aunt until his mother is released from jail. On his tenth birthday his mother appears to take him home and his aunt dies. He moves in with his mom, her husband Jordan and her daughter Angel.Gerald finds out that Jordan is hitting his mother (Monique) and abusing his little sister. He gets help from his friends father and Jordan is arrested and sent to jail. After he gets out of jail he goes back and joins the family. Jordan no longer abused Angel but continued to hit Gerald and Monique. Gerald and Angel had a very positive relationship.In high school Gerald makes the basketball team and begin to make friends with the other boys on the team. One night there is a car accident where the captain of the team gets killed. Gerald is sad and confused because he couldn't do anything about the death of his friend.I recommend this book to anyone that doesn't really like reading, like me, because it keeps your attention.

Let me start by saying I am a social worker whose whole career has been working with youth and families. I read this story because it was on my daughter's reading list for battle of book. I like to know what my teen is reading. I was very moved by this tell. As a social worker we see the situation from one angle and try to work with the family where they are. I appreciated the getting to look at the internal thoughts of those involved in the situation. I think it so easy as a worker or even just as a neighbor, a teacher, church member to get jaded about or question our role in situations of abuse. This story reminds us what's at stake when we fail to be vigilant and what we gain when we offer that life line in the darkness just as Mr Washington offers to Gerald and Angel.

This book changed my life, I no longer believe that I can't be rich. In fact this is the second time I have purchased this book to re-read it. Before getting to page 50 where it says: are you growing your money or is it sitting safe in the bank? This caused me to re-think and decide to purchase my fifth rental investment. Everyone can be rich with a little bit of discipline. This is a must reading for anyone who doubts that they are not destined to be rich, or at least comfortable with their lifestyle. Great book!

I'm a little sorry to see all of the negative reviews this book has gotten, since I found it to be one of the most eye-opening things I've ever read and, by following some of its advice, have gotten my finances into better shape than they have been in years.Let me clarify some things. This is not a book for the financially advanced, for professionial money managers or financial advisors, or for stock brokers. The intended audience here is the "Average Person" who works at something else every day but wants to better understand how to handle their money. This person probably has credit card debt, spotty savings, and some bad financial habits. I had none of those things when I picked up this book and I still learned tons from reading it.The principal message here is that being rich begins with your thoughts. They way we think about money determines to a huge degree what we do with it, how we invest it, and how we spend it. I think no one will deny that fundamental truth, but Suze's gift is finding the ways to connect our thoughts with practical advice to change bad habits for the better. Many people could make a few simple changes in their lives and end up with a lot more money, and over time, that could mean real wealth.It is true that some of the conclusions here will seem obvious to the financially savvy. But I question the idea that this is all "repackaged common knowledge." It isn't. Her messages are of the kind that bear repeating. How many people still buy a $3.50 latte every morning, stick thousands of dollars in a bank savings account at .2% interest, and have credit card debt well beyond what they can handle? If it were so obvious that these are unwise things to do with money, fewer people would do them! Suze shows that it's not enough just to recognize financially unhealthy behavior, you must also understand your personal history with money, the way you have been taught to think about it and value it, and understand how that history influences your financial decisions. Her recognition of the emotional value of money gives her the edge over other financial how-to books, which typically assume that money is a raw numbers game. It's much more than that, and Suze is right on insisting so.Her most controversial advice is that you, and not a financial planner, must ultimately be responsible for your money, and I think a lot of the one-star ratings below are from frightened financial planners who know that Suze is onto their game. She does not, for the record, say that you should never work with one, but simply acknowledges that the ultimate responsibility for your money is with YOU and not someone you pay to organize your investments. I think she's right, and with all of the online resources available today, there's no reason to be ignorant about how money works in our society. A little more attention from you can mean a lot more peace with your money, and being responsible makes it much easier to make money grow.One of the best sections of this book comes at the end, when she talks about the importance of giving. I just loved her discussion of how important it is to give and wish everybody would read it! For you, The Courage to Be Rich is a one star book.I appreciate the care and consideration Ms. Orman shows to her readers who may be suffering from emotional overwhelm (such as often occurs during and after a divorce, after a loved one dies, or while buying a first home). Her lists will probably help these anguished souls.Although money has a lot to do with math, Ms. Orman correctly perceives that it is all about emotion as well. Emotion and math do not mix well, and she provides many useful insights into how to make them work better together.An experienced and credentialed psychological counselor she is not, however. I suspect this book would have been better with two co-authors, one who is an expert on emotions about money and the other who is an expert on money to supplement Ms. Orman's skill as a communicator.Ms. Orman is neither, so th is book's treatment is pretty lightweight in both areas. But if it gets you started in dealing with your issues, all the better for you.The only part that seemed totally inadequate was her writing off of tax issues: You will spend a lot of money on taxes in your life and your choices do have a large impact on how much you will spend. Her advice is to feel good about paying more taxes because your income is higher. By contrast, someone who really wants to be rich needs to compound as much money tax-free or tax-deferred as possible. This book does not begin to address that subject.The Courage to Be Rich is a better book for dealing with specific life traumas such as divorce, death, and so forth. This book would be a good gift to a friend who has such an event in his or her life.Her stories are good, because they bring home the message of how crippling too much emotion can be, so we take this problem more seriously.I think the biggest misconception people have about money is that they do not need to address their feelings about money. In that sense, Ms. Orman is doing a lot for us by reminding us that we have deeply held beliefs and attitudes that deserve being reexamined from time to time. I enjoyed reading the book, although it only added to stockpile of stories, rather than my knowledge.Maybe the book's obvious appeal for general audiences can best be understood by thinking about the experience of watching a tear-jerker of a movie or television show -- you get a great feeling from knowing that the cataclysm is not happening to you.If you have heard Ms. Orman speak at length on television (which she does a lot), you can probably safely skip this book.To get a good return on your time with this review, I suggest that you pick one belief about money that you have where strong emotion comes into play. If that emotion does not serve you well, rephrase what you believe until it does serve you in the right way. Then, you'll have mastered a skill for having more!Live with rich thoughts and warm emotions!

The first 7 chapters and the last chapters (21-22) of this book are amazing and uplifting. But, personally, I felt that the stuff in this book about money and relationships, money and marriage and money and divorce really should have been shortened and simplified here and kept more positive and uplifting than it was for me. I did read the whole thing, and it all was interesting to me, perhaps because I am a financial planner. So for my clients I would recommend they read or listen to this book, but that they "stick their toe" into each chapter of chapters 8-20; if they find that chapter's subject matter useful, relevant and uplifting for them, then they should ride out the chapter and see what Suze has to say about the subject; if they don't, then I'd recommend they just skip on to the next chapter. This is a classic that's been updated to feel rather current.

This book is only first volume. It is not complete 9 volume work. Name is misleading. Table-of-content shown is fraud. Only volume I is present. No page numbers and no clearly marked sections. This is one continuous book where chapters and sections starts anywhere in the middle of the page and titles are not bold either. They are in same font as regular text making hard to spot. I left one star for print quality.Old review:I was looking for Swamiji's complete work which comes as multiple volumes. But this is a single book. I don't think it has all volumes combined based on its size. Also its a strange book. It has no page numbers. It has no separation of chapters. Chapters starts inline with regular text anywhere on the page and have same text size, format as rest of the text. So without page numbers and no chapter/section separation, it is difficult to read. Better by 9 volume set. I gave ** for paper and print quality which is good.

The most substantial "negative" comment on this volume in past reviews is that there is no TOC. I hesitated to urchase this book but decided to download the trial first to see if a TOC had been added sinc ethat negative review was posted. And..yes, there is now a TOC. As of today (Jan. 6 2015) there is a very detailed TOC with live links to each section of eafch volume. The TOC is so large that it is difficult to navigate but this is easily remedied by doing a search for the word "Volume" - you get a list of each of the 9 volume headings and from there you can click on whatever section you want. Each section is also numbered so if you know the volume and section you are looking for you can search on the number (for example 7.1) and navigate directly to that section or any of its subsectoins (7.1.1, 7.1.2 etc.)Combine this workable TOC with the Kindle's ability to search for any concept (like "karma") and this Kindle edition is a practical a way to access Vivekananda's writings and talks as you are ever likely to find. As a bonus text to speech (TTS) is enabled. If you have a fluid TTS voice installed on your tablet (my favorite is the British TTS voice "Brian" which is available on the HDX tabletsg) you an turn on text to speech and imagine you are at one of Vivekananda's talks.

As a Christian in the world today, I believe it is also important to be familiar with other religious traditions. I must also confess having a long term fascination with Hinduism simply because it is the oldest of the major religions of the world, the others being Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I also respect Hinduism as I find many of its practitioners to be humble and good people.What I like most about Swami Vivekananda is the freshness of his writing, which is saying something because it is over a century old. There is a sense of immediacy to these essays, lectures, and letters. You get a bang for the buck here with this series of 8 volumes, which are in a handsome set and easy to read. SwamiJI covers a wide range of topics including many lectures and essays on Hinduism, the Vedas, Christianity, and the place of religion in the world. For Christians, it is insightful to see how followers of another faith based tradition speak of you!In addition there are many practical lectures on meditation, and yoga, popular topics today. If you're not familiar with Swami Vivekananda, there are many videos on Youtube where you can get your feet wet as it were. I'd start there and then start reading. You can't go wrong with the Complete Works!

This kindle version of this book was the need of these days....we need to spread Swamiji's work in every way possible. If you are interested in Hinduism or Budhhism or Indian Culture or you are just in search for a greater peaceful life you should read this book. Just to reach all the people we are getting this a way below than a nominal rate. But the content of this book can change your view towards life forever. I hope all the Indians may already know about Swamiji a little or more. For the Non-Indian people I am giving a little history about his profound influence on Western Countries:Swami Vivekananda, the nineteenth-century Indian Hindu monk is considered as one of the most influential people of modern India and Hinduism.Vivekananda, during and after his tour of western countries in Europe and the United States had profound influence on notable personalities, who either became his ardent devotees or friends and some even his ardent disciples and many of whom even became ascetics. Right at the beginning of his visit to Chicago to address the Parliament of World Religions Professor John Henry Wright of Harvard University, invited him to speak at Harvard. He pointed out to Vivekananda the necessity of going to the Parliament of Religions, which he thought would give an introduction to the nation. Wright's reasoning was "To ask for your credentials is like asking the sun to state its right to shine in the heavens". Some of such well-known luminaries are: Max Müller (Indologist), J. J. Goodwin, John Henry Barrows, Mark Twain, Sturdy, Romain Rolland, Sara Chapman Bull, his American mother and benefactor, Mary Hale, Josephine MacLeod, Christine Greenstidel (who later came to be known as Sister Christine, Maragaret Noble (Sister Nivedita in later years), William James, Josiah Royce, Robert G. Ingersoll, Nikola Tesla, Lord Kelvin, Harriet Monroe, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Sarah Bernhardt, Emma Calvé and Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz He initiated several followers : Marie Louise (a French woman) became Swami Abhayananda, and Leon Landsberg became Swami Kripananda.American industrialist John D. Rockefeller reportedly made his first large donation for public welfare and later became a notable philanthropist after a meeting with Vivekananda. Vivekananda succinctly explained to Rockfeller that his philanthropy would only be a channel to help the poor and distressed people.Vivekananda influenced French Opera singer Emma Calvé, who wrote in her autobiography:It has been my good fortune and my joy to know a man who truly "walked with God," a noble being, a saint, a philosopher, and a true friend. His influence upon my spiritual life was profound. He opened up new horizons before me, enlarging and vivifying my religious ideas and ideals, teaching me a broader understanding of truth. My soul will bear him an eternal gratitude.Vivekananda's life and works have influenced many scholars, writers, politicians worldwide. French writer Romain Rolland wrote that Vivekananda was "energy personified". Rolland felt "kingliness" was Vivekananda's characteristics, "He was a born king and nobody ever came near him in India or America without paying homage to his majesty." American writer, historian, philosopher Will Durant told, the speeches of Vivekananda were more "virile" than the ones delivered in the Vedic times.The nationalist leader and the first president of independent Indonesia Sukarno said that it was Swami Vivekananda who inspired him to become strong and to serve God and mankind. Historian and Indologist Arthur Llewellyn Basham compared Vivekananda with other eminent religious figures of India such as Kabir, Adi Shankara, Chaitanya. Russian academician and public figure Eugene Chelyshev was an ardent admirer of Swami Vivekananda. He said:"Reading and re-reading the works of Vivekananda each time I find in them something new that helps deeper to understand India, its philosophy, the way of the life and customs of the people in the past and the present, their dreams of the future..."Barack Obama, the President of the United States, quoted Vivekananda's words in his speech delivered in India in November 2010. He said:"Instead of succumbing to division, you have shown that the strength of India—the very idea of India—is its embrace of all colors, castes and creeds. It's the diversity represented in this chamber today. It's the richness of faiths celebrated by a visitor to my hometown of Chicago more than a century ago—the renowned Swami Vivekananda. He said that, "holiness, purity and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world, and that every system has produced men and women of the most exalted character."
