Dr. Barnard writes that just adding an ounce a day of seeds or nuts (for the proper form of vitamin E) will help reduce the risk of Alzheimers by 70%. Add berries, apples, pears, grapes, green leafy vegetables, and beans to your diet. Certainly things we can all do easily! Also, get rid of saturated fats. We all know we need to to this for heart health, and we need to do it for brain health as well.The book also describes brain exercises as well as the benefits of physical exercise and gives some specific things to do. Just a half hour three times a week can make a huge difference.And, very importantly for many of our aging population, what medications can be causing severe damage to our cognition. We found this to be true for my mother. We were able to get her off of her statins from adopting the 21-Day Kickstart diet, and that made a tremendous difference in her ability to think clearly and get rid of the "brain fog" that was following her around like the proverbial dark cloud. We have already made a lot of the changes he suggests in this book, but we are learning some new information to incorporate into our lifestyle, so I would recommend this book even for those who have read other of Dr. Barnard's books.Finding the root cause of cognitive problems can be quite a riddle to solve. I know it has been with my mother. In this book, Dr. Barnard walks you through the variety of things that can be a problem. One of the important things he noted is that not only can medications impact mental function, and the problems can add up as you add more medications. As we discovered in my family, the doctors did not even consider this while medicating my mother, and we had to do the detective work on medications ourselves. Some of the biggest culprits include sleep medications, statins (cholesterol lowering drugs), anti depressants, allergy meds/antihistamines, anxiety medications, pain killers, blood pressure medications, and antacids. Some of these you can just trade out for another kind, but others you really need to see a doctor about and have it managed properly. Dr. Barnard discusses this and tells you how to address the subject with your doctor. We also called our pharmacist and asked him to take a look at what my mother was taking before we saw the doctor so that we arrived to the appointment as informed as possible.In addition to medications, Dr Barnard discusses problems that can arise from other areas, such as food intolerances, depression, menopause (this was a big one for me!), thyroid problems, infections, migraines, cancer treatments, diabetes, and more.There are about 75 recipes in the book. I haven't tried them yet, but they are by the same chef who created the recipes in the Kickstart book, so I expect these to be equally easy to make and quite tasty. Examples of breakfasts include blueberry buckwheat pancakes with veggie sausage and cantaloupe; waffles with maple "bacon;" and breakfast wraps. Examples of lunches include veggie falafel with pita bread and a garden salad; easy colorful pasta salad over mixed greens; English muffin pizza; and a Tuscan wrap. Examples of dinners include red lentil soup with brown rice salad and steamed spinach, tacos with potatoes, swiss chard, and pinto beans with a spinach salad and mashed sweet potato; white bean chili with red rice, steamed spinach, and banana ice cream; and baked ziti with a rainbow salad and strawberry dressing, and warm apple cherry compote. The recipes seem very simple to make without an excessive amount of ingredients or anything excessively costly.I'd like to briefly address the criticism of Dr Barnard's plan that it can be too restrictive or drastic. It may seem that way with an initial look, but to me, loss of brain function and the prospect of losing mobility, cognition, emotions, and the toll that cognitive degeneration can cause on our families are what's really restrictive and drastic. Being bedridden or institutionalized for our later years is restrictive and drastic. Not remembering our children or being able to experience (or even remember) normal emotions is restrictive and drastic. And in light of those very real and unfortunately not uncommon possibilities, Dr Barnard's suggestions are neither restrictive or drastic.Speaking as part of a family that started to make some of these changes about a year ago, they aren't initially easy (it can definitely be hard to give up some of the food we have gotten used to), but if you work at it a little bit at a time and just keep trying, it becomes easier and easier as time goes by (the book has a special section to help deal with food cravings and why we have them). It took way less than a year for our taste buds to change and for this way of life to become not only easy for us, but enjoyable.This book adds to the vast amount of information already out there on the benefits of plant-based diets and is suitable for those who already consider themselves well-read on the subject--there is, of course, some information you will have already heard, but there is more information that is new and important and not available from other mainstream sources.Thank you for reading my review. This is an important topic and I know it's hard for some people to think about some of the changes Dr. Barnard suggests. But it's very do-able.

Dr Barnard suggests a plant-based diet such as fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes: "Foods can change your life." His advice stems from his life experience, from his practice as a physician and from his team's extensive research.A good example is illustrated on page 82. Benjamin Spock, MD a well-known pediatrician, in his later years suffered from chronic lung problems. Also, a bout of serious food poisoning left him with chronic neuropathy, weakening his legs. His doctors at Boston Medical Center couldn't do much for him. Only a drastic change in his diet, replacing meat and cheese with vegetables and whole grains alleviated his health problems. Then, learning from his own experience, Dr. Spock began to advocate for a healthful diet in his revised book "Baby and Child Care." Dr. Spock lived till the age of ninety-five.I am taking the liberty to share briefly my story. I am a Holocaust survivor. At the age of fifteen, the Nazis detained me in forced labor and concentration camps for a period of three years. I was beaten and starved. It left many physical and mental scars that never received any medical treatment there. I was liberated by the Russian army in May 1945. Their doctors gave me a thorough examination. I weighed eighty pounds, and they told me, "Sorry young man, your life span will not be long." I was 18 years old then; I am 87 now.For many years after the war I was a very sickly young man. The most troubling ailment had been my inability to digest common staples of food such as meat, dairy products, etc. My stomach rejected and ejected them. I had been seeking and getting medical treatments; different diagnoses were made and a variety of medications were prescribed which did not help much. A co-worker once suggested to me to adopt his vegetarian diet. I took his advice; at the age of 41, I became a strict vegetarian and a teetotaler. I don't claim to know what the best diet for everybody's health is, but having reached the age of 87 I have a valid reason to believe that a purely plant-based diet is good for a healthy body and mind.I learned a lot from POWER FOODS FOR THE BRAIN and I am highly recommending this easy-to-read book to anyone seeking to improve his/her health. I found many practical tips about specific foods and eating patterns to be very helpful in all aspects of health. I am grateful to Dr. Barnard for enhancing my knowledge with his knowledge. I get it if people liked it but to me it was a line with no feelings involved, like when a heart stops beating. Long dialogs to give too much info and too little emotion. I give 2 stars because the idea was good and the characters were chosen correctly.

This book did not disappoint. It hit a lot of the taboo, hot, spicy, and just plain fun parts of a sexual relationship while still telling an amazing story. I adored Ronan and Jamie’s story. So if you love the May/December trope with some BDSM thrown in - read this book.

The warning page should have read the only kink in this novel will put you to sleep!

OHMYGOOOOD! This book! THIS! BOOK! Ahhhh it was everything! One of my favorite read this year!The story, the characters, the emotions, the BDSM scenes, the side characters and EVERYTHING was just PERFECT!I loved reading it, it was beautifully written and cute. Ronan - alias Dr. Kink - LOL. I loved him, he was such an amazing character and dom, and i loved how strong and patient he was.And Jamie *sigh* the cutest ever! And the voyeurism ahhhh it was perfect!I didn't know what an open-relationship would look like, and i read it open minded - LOL! - and i loved it. I loved how Ronan acted in every situation and how he handled everything with Jamie. I think this is such a good kink and i hardly find good books about voyeurism in the m/m genre, but this was perfect!The relationship between Ronan and Jamie was so beautiful and i loved the slow but strong storyline. The love-making was THE BEST scene ever, OMG it was so good i cried while reading it, my heart was full with emotions it was so beautiful!I loved everything about this book, everything from the beginning until the end- and that epilogue awwww so adorable!I can't wait to the next book, and can't wait to read more from the authors!I highly recommend this book. It was loving, caring, passionate, lots of openness, tons of understanding, KINK AT ITS FINEST but most of it had a powerful couple to bring it all together to make an amazing and exciting story! These two extraordinary authors came together and created two dynamic characters that were so easy to love and enjoy combined with tons of awesome friends I got to meet within their journey.After traveling overseas, Jamie finally wants to settle down get nursing position and make this town a place to settle his roots.Ronan Kincaid his losing his best good friend and best nurse he has ever worked with to have a baby and become a stay at home mommie. Although, he is extremely happy for her, he dreads the day that she will leave. She promises that she will find him the nurse that will be his perfect fit. After, two failed attempts he is starting to question her choices, and then he meets Jamie. He is perfect and seems to check all the boxes now he has to ask the one that could make or break his decision to hire him.Jaime sex life was never boring to him or so he thought until he found out exactly what kind of doctor's office Dr. Kincaid ran. But after taking the job, he keeps and open mind and learns so much about the lifestyle as well as himself. Before long Dr. Kincaid becomes more than just his boss. Soon work and play take on a whole new meaning when these two decided to take the work home with them.This book is extremely too hot to read without some ways for relief and cooling off periods.

When Jamie starts working for Dr Kincaid, or Dr. Kink in the BDSM community, he is pretty clueless about BDSM, and has no idea he has a kinky side. Not until he leaves his phone at work one Friday night, and witnesses for himself how Ronan spends his Friday nights.After he decides to spend another Friday night as a Peeping Tom, it’s undeniable that his main kink is voyuerism. When Ronan finds out, he is more than ready to explore kink with his naughty nurse, particularly since he’s tired of fighting his attraction to the younger man.This is the perfect introduction to kink and BDSM. Through Jamie’s kink, he and the reader are introduced to a variety of kinks, including puppy play, humiliation, feminization, and the daddy/boy dynamic. Some of which I hope is explored more in future books.I really loved this, Ronan is the perfect teacher and partner. Though he is the reason for the minor drama that hits towards the end of the book. Luckily, while Jamie is happy to submit in the bedroom, he is not afraid to take charge in other areas of his life. These two really are a great couple.Im looking forward to reading more in this series, possibly starring characters we meet in this book.

I liked Jamie and Ronan and thought they had real potential for an interesting story. But, the book just didn’t tell me that story. There were big jumps in the relationship and things happening out of sync. Since the premise is about someone newly discovering kink, I would think we’d see that exploration unfold. I really wanted to see that. Instead, it’s discovery about being a voyeur, let me show you my dungeon, we don’t need a contract it’ll unfold organically, and suddenly it is two months in and Ronan is asking a scene partner we haven’t met before if they’d be ok with Jamie watching because that’s what they’ve decided works for them. News to us. Then we never learn the result of that conversation with Tate. I would’ve thought we’d at least get some view into the decision to have an open relationship and under what terms since it was all new to Jamie. Then we get references to it only being several weeks since they got together, a conversation about limits and preferences, and Jamie’s favorite flogger. Again, news to us and out of sequence to the storyline. It felt like things had been cut out of the book and then threads were left loose. Having enjoyed several other books by Luna David, I was surprised as I found those to have more cohesive storylines and character development.

I've been a long time reader of ohdeardrea and could NOT wait for this cookbook! So far I've made the garam masala pancakes with orange infused coconut whipped cream, bread soup, and cucumber sandwich with dill spread (my personal favorite out of the 3 I've tried to far, although I'm a total wimp and halved my jalapeno).I cannot wait to try more. I really think it's awesome that Drea has so many recipes that do not revolve around faux meats, as I do not eat these (except the rare tempeh). I also really, really like that she has given ideas for kids and leftover use on some of the recipes. I'm personally not very creative in this regard (leftovers), so it is much appreciated.Seriously, you won't regret this cookbook.EDIT (2 weeks later): I've seen also made the potato leek soup (twice) and beans & rice, both of which were insanely easy and quick to make, and fantastic. And my 6 year old ate them without complaints. I now declare this BEST COOKBOOK EVER. Thanks, Drea!

My family is not vegan, but it's hard to sneak veggies into dinners that the whole family can eat. We have a picky 5 year old and a 3 year old who would love nothing else to eat pizza and hamburgers for every meal. We've been able to use several of these recipes just in the first week of owning the cookbook and our kids have really enjoyed dinner... without pizza or hamburgers!

I am not a vegan but I am learning more and my goal is to have our home filled with plant based meals. I chose this cookbook based on how these were family friendly recipes to include her daughters favorites; I love that idea.I've cooked quite a few recipes so far but to be honest more than half were on the bland side once finished. For example, the butternut squash lasagna. EVERYTHING smelled & tasted delicious UNTIL it was baked. The noodles & butternut squash soaked up every ounce of juice which left a dry & bland lasangna that we couldn't even finish.WITH THAT SAID. The red sauce with the fresh oregano made it taste like it was from a restaurant! And I had NO idea that I could make a white sauce out of butter beans!My sister in law who eats plant based meals loved a few meals from this cookbook.I do like that I have a base for MY taste. I now have new vegan recipes that I can change to my liking.You will love the photos & how this cookbook is set up!

This is the best cookbook ever. My husband is a big meat eater. He hates when I try to make him vegan meals... or at least did, until I started cooking from this book. Every single recipe has not only been a success with him, but also with my four young children. Love, love, love this book! We've made the biscuits and gravy (I will sometimes add scrambled tofu to it), everyone's favorite potatoes, French toast with roasted fruit, pea pesto, chocolate butter and strawberries, chickpea salad sandwich, green soup, corn and potato chowder, vegetable and bean chili, chickpea pot pie, empanadas, aloo gobi, veggie fried rice, mac and cheese, and plantain cornbread. Every single one was so amazing, my husband didn't even miss the meat! Do yourself a favor, buy this book.

My favorite vegan cookbook of all time and I’ve been cooking vegan for 7 years now. I borrowed it from the library and then ordered my very own copy. We’ve made about 9 recipes so far and they’re all kid approved by my troop which is priceless.

This is quickly becoming my favorite cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow, approachable and healthy. I appreciate the consideration given to toddler eating habits since we have one. Also, the photos are gorgeous!

Really fun and easy recipes with plenty of pics. It’s written not in a condescending or militant manner either, but just talking about the health benefits of plant based eating and the authors choices for her family. I’ve tried several recipes and enjoyed them all.

Great cook book with a wide range of recipes. Wonderful pictures and helpful tips including how to make recipes more kid friendly. Only 4 stars because most of the recipes did not spark my interest. To be fare, lots of soy in the recipes and we have a soy allergy.
