This book is fabulous! I didn't pay attention to the size of the book and it's quite large. About the size of a spiral notebook but thicker and sturdier. That's perfectly fine with me but just keep that in mind. These activities are great. The graphics are fun and are great for boy or girl. I can't wait for my daughter to use this book.

I purchased this to help my 9 year old transition from Children's Church into "adult" church. For the most part, I'm very pleased with the book. There are three pages per week, with several different activities that help kids engage in the church service. My daughter has been using the book for a month now and she is still excited about using it. The activities are the same from one week to the next, so I'm curious whether her enthusiasm will dwindle later on. Activities include a checklist for such things as "I said a prayer when I got up this morning, I brought my Bible to church, etc."; a section with commonly heard words (Jesus, God, etc.) that you can mark off when you hear in the sermon; a section to jot down words or ideas that you didn't understand; a section for "I will pray for _____"; a section for favorite song sung during the service; and so forth. There are a few things that I think would make the book better, and would make it a definite five-star purchase:1.) I wish there was a bit more space for actual sermon notes, but I've encouraged my daughter to just use any free white space to jot down her notes.2.) We are still working on the whole concept of HOW to take notes, so it might actually be nice for this book to include a few pointers in the front of the book to help get kids started.3.) I'd like to see an "application" section each week. Something to the effect of, "What does this lesson mean for ME?" to really get kids thinking about how they can apply the lesson to their day at school, while playing with friends, while interacting with their family, and so on. Obviously this is also something that we can do on our own, independent of the workbook, but I know my daughter especially is one who likes doing activities in a book far better than she likes doing abstract work that her Mom came up with. ;)If any others who have purchased this book have recommendations on how to expand its usefulness, I'd love to hear your suggestions!!

I haven't actually given this yo my 8 and 10 year old boys yet, but I received it today and was checking it out. I guess I didn't see the inside well before purchasing...the sermon notes section is a VERY small section-maybe 3x5 9or slightly larger but with only 3-4 short lines to write on. I expect a little more from my 8 year old, and definitely more for the 10year old. I like that it has another (small) section on a different page for question/things not understood, but some of the other sections seem more appropriate for a 6-8 year old. (A checklist for points for bringing your Bible/brushing your teeth/praying(I like that one!) in the morning but it takes up a large portion of the page. There is also a large area taken by checking off different "church words" that you hear-again, not bad, but possibly more appropriate for a younger audience. Honestly, I probably wouldn't really mind these as much if there was a larger sermon note area-like a half page, instead of the larger portion of the book being taken by "younger" activities. I do like the "doodle" area, because many kids listen well while doodling. FYI, the book is large-probably 8 1/2 x 11 size.

My grandchildren used these books yesterday for the first time and LOVE THEM!! Their mom was happy they were more quiet and less wiggly. Their father, the Pastor, was super impressed with this book!! Love the content. The kids are excite to earn points and really connected with the prayer list section! Thank you for this book!!

I bought four of these for children in my Sunday school class and they LOVE them! I looked over the notes of one of the children on Sunday and they really did have a good grasp of the sermon and I give credit to this book for that. I only hope they keep it up. And by the way, all of the parents were positive about the book as well. Good job by the writers. Also, the illustrations are very cute.

What a great idea! My son is really enjoying these as the "earning points" idea appeals to his competitive spirit and this encourages him to pay attention during the services and also gives space for his doodles and thoughts. The only change I would make would be to have this a spiral binding instead of the current binding.

What a fabulous idea. We really enjoy our books and we have received so many compliments from others at church. I would say this is good up to age 10/11, depending on how strong of writer or reader you have. There is small space for notes, so if you want to encourage more note taking then I would say go for the book for young ladies. This book also has space for drawing, a word list to keep the children focused during the sermon as they try and listen for certain words. A list that reminds you to read your bible during the week, pray, come to church withe right attitude. A space to write the scripture for that day's sermon. As well as your favorite worship song that was sung during church. There is also a section to write prayers. If your children sit in adult service, this is a great tool to have with you. It keeps them engaged, keeps them busy, and teaches them to start taking notes, as well as providing something to take home and study during the week.

My daughter and I have both enjoyed her use of this journal. It gives us an easy way to get into discussing the sermon and what each family member took away from it. She has even brought it into the restaurant with her, of her own choice, to discuss while we wait for our Sunday lunch to be brought to the table. I find this a very valuable tool so as not to hear the sermon and then leave it at the church doors. It is a visual reminder in a time of hurried life to stop and really discuss and learn what the sermon is teaching.

Review

By: Liz Maude  - January 28, 2009 I am teaching Sunday School to 4-6th grade students and determined that their knowledge of the Old Testament was greatly lacking. I decided to take them through a study on the Tabernacle and as I researched materials that I could use, I discovered Rose Publishing's Rose Guide to the Tabernacle. I was hopeful that it would be helpful and ordered it. Upon receiving the book, I am very excited to have it as a resource for my class! The illustrations alone are very informative. I appreciate the text and the information given as well as the well-organized format. When I shared the book with my students as a preview of things to come, they were all excited. The layover sheets help to bring alive an understanding that goes beyond words. I would recommend this resource to anyone!By: Susan Clark  - January 27, 2009 The book is very detailed and easy to use. I facilitate adult education classes and use this book to assist in teaching. I especially found the charts/diagrams extremely helpful in these classes. At times I have made copies for the students to use, and they were received with great response! The charts/diagrams are large and colorful and easy on the eyes, and jam-packed with wonderful information. The definition sidebars are also very useful. The overlays are irreplaceable for demonstration purposes. This book has numerous references contained all in one!! (i.e. encyclopedia, dictionary....). I have encouraged students to purchase this resource, as it will provide for many years of enjoyment! Bravo on a work well done!By: Jeff Craft/ Chapel Store Downey – February 5, 2009 The Rose Guide to the Tabernacle is an excellent study tool. It is a spiral bound book containing all the important information concerning the tabernacle. It is divided into 3 insightful sections. The significance and symbolism of the tabernacle that points to Christ is clearly pointed out. The highlight of the book is the transparent overlays interspersed through out. The illustrations are outstanding and very attractive.

About the Author

Benjamin Galán grew up in a Christian home in Mexico City. During his studies, Galán became enamored with natural sciences. In college, Galán studied physics and mathematics, and grew indifferent and hostile toward the Christian faith. Along with the French mathematician Laplace, Galán believed God was no longer a necessary hypothesis. After additional studies, Galán began to long for deep, satisfying connections and meaning in his young life. Through the moving testimony of a friend in school, Galán began to read the Bible with renewed eyes, and eventually returned to church. As he became more involved in the ministry of his home church, Galán sensed God's calling. During his theological studies, Galán fell in love with the Old Testament and understood the Old Testament as the key for understanding the New Testament. Galán holds a Master of Theology in Old Testament, MTS Biblical Studies, and is adjunct professor of Hebrew language and Literature at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Some of the info in the book is opinion and/or not relevant to the truth that is written in the Bible.I suggest you already know what the Bible says first before reading all if the author's opinions. However, where the facts from the Bible are written that pertain to the Tabernacle along with the pictures and especially the beautiful clear lay overs so you can see better what the Tabernacle looked it is of great value to the ernest Bible student to the more casual curious Bible reader.God had certain things placed in the Tabernacle that you read about in the Bible. The pictures in this book make them come alive. It is if excellent quality. I don't see how it could be better quality.

While the content of this book is helpful, don't buy the Kindle version thinking you can download the charts, as advertised throughout the book..."Get this entire ebook as a FREE full-color, printable PDF." The link will not take you to a printable version or PDF, it will simply take you to a place where you can buy a printed version. A representative at Rose Publishing said they no longer offer the free printable version that is advertised (and linked) in the Kindle version. I wish I had known this prior to purchasing the digital version, I would have simply ordered the print version and made several copies of several of the charts from that, for a Sunday School class, (as approved by Rose Publishing copy permissions).

WOW! This volume is accurate in every detail from a reading of the original text. Although the exact representations undoubtably vary from the originals (understandably) the explanations as well as the illustrations are orthodox in every respect. I am impressed by the scholarship exhibited in presenting this work, especially in the detail of the many references throughout the scriptural account. This is really a bargain. The publisher has gone out of its way to make the copyrighted material available for educational purposes, which tells me that they are more concerned with furthering the gospel than they are in wringing every nickel of profit from the public. I will go out of my way to make additional purchases from this company.

the art work, illustrations, reconstructions and information presented in this book are truly incredible it covers everything you could possibly know about the Tabernacle to full colour reconstructions with splendid overlays you lift up with an abundance of information and a lot more. Reading the construction of the Tabernacle can be quite boring in Exodus when you read this should be this many cubits and that this many cubits and so on and so on and that is because we don't have a visual description but thanks to the rose guide to the tabernacle you will have. You will learn the importance and symbology of the sacrifices and feast and how they point to Christ and many more things so don't worry about any other Tabernacle books out there just read this one and this one only.

As a teacher of Bible studies, I found this wonderful teaching tool and must say it is extremely well done, connecting the dots from the Old Testament tabernacle in the wilderness to the Cross of Christ. The presentation is excellent; a child can understand it but it is not too childlike for committed Christians. "Where did they get the gold?" (to build the various items in the tabernacle) was a question a student asked just the other day. This book answers that question in a little text box all its own. There are timelines, genealogies, drawings, and clear plastic overlays that are invaluable. If you want to follow the unbroken line from Moses' tabernacle to and through the Cross of Christ, this is your tool. Buy it.

I have found this book to be very informative on the subject matter. It clearly details what worship was like at the Tabernacle. The descriptions are presented in an easy to be understood manner. Permission is also given to copy the information for classroom use only. It is a spiral bound book so that is helpful if you would like to copy any of the articles. The book includes overlays which are helpful when looking at the different sections of the Tabernacle. The full color pictures lend to the appeal of the book. This book is for anyone who would like to know more about the Tabernacle.

I love the overlays1 I sat down when I received this book and read it cover to cover. I would recommend this to anyone teaching or learning about the tabernacle. It brought in history, biblical references, and good explanation and description of every facet of the tabernacle.

Love this tool. As a Bible student who is fascinated with the anything having to do with the Tabernacle, this book is an incredible resource. So glad I got it. The overlays allow me to see everything as it is stationed inside the Tabernacle, in it's place. The articles go into solid detail about each item associated with the Tabernacle. Also tells where the tribes were placed outside the Tabernacle and what the priests wore and what their duties were. Most of all, it speaks of the symbolism involved.

From the Back Cover

Larry McMurtry returns to the unforgettable Texas town and characters of one of his best-loved books, The Last Picture Show. Texasville is a Texas-sized story brimming with home truths of the heart, and the men and women we recognize, believe in, and care about deeply. Set in the post-oil-boom 1980s, Texasville brings us up to date with Duane, who's got an adoring dog, a sassy wife, a twelve-million-dollar debt, and a hot tub by the pool; Jacy, who's finished playing "Jungla" in Italian movies and who's returned to Thalia; and Sonny -- Duane's teenage rival for Jacy's affections -- who owns the car wash, the Kwik-Sack store, and the video arcade.

TEXASVILLE picks up the lives of the main characters (and a sometimes bewildering array of minor characters) from McMurtry's THE LAST PICTURE SHOW 30 years down the line. The protagonist, Dwayne Moore, has suffered the booms and busts of the oil business, has lived for several decades with his feisty wife, Karla, with whom he has not only a passel o' children but also grandchildren, all of whom display Karla's chaotic character. Jacey, the beautiful but heartless local beauty returns from Italy to mourn the death of a son in solitude, but becomes involved in Thalia, Texas', turbulent preparations for the county's centennial. The novel abounds in quirky, sometimes irritating small-town characters, most of whom you may remember from THE LAST PICTURE SHOW. In many ways, Dwayne comes across as a small-town Everyman, mostly propelled into action from his habitual inaction, by the characters surrounding him. Alternately funny, poignant, humdrum, and (occasionally) irritating, TEXASVILLE provides an extended visit to a small, primarily rural community that might be called "Peyton Place, Texas."

First I watched the movie "The Last Picture Show" which was surprisingly good. After that I read the book which was also pretty good. I was surprised to find out that the book was a part of a trilogy. Immediately that I found out I bought this book. It was a disappointment. It is like this book was written by somebody else and the author merely supervised the work. The book is not bad, but not at the level of first one either. I am skipping the third one. This book is just not credible. If I wanted to read bed time stories, I would have read some tall tales. Sorry, Larry!

This was one of my favorite books to read. I was totally engaged by the story and the of cast characters in "Texasville made it worth while. I was happy to follow up on some of my beloved favorite characters from "The Last Picture Show" and was impressed by a lot of the newer characters as well. This book is a little bit longer than the first book but the overall story in my opinion is more exciting and fast paced compared to the former book in the series. I really love Larry McMurtry's style of writing and how he keeps me interested in his characters. I get the same feeling from "Lonesome Dove" as well. No wonder why I keep coming back to read his other works. It is always worth while in the end. I would recommend!!

Here's my simple guide to telling the worth of a book. If I'm on the bus on my daily commute and I miss my stop because I'm engrossed in what I'm reading, it's a good book. When I miss my stop several days in a row, it's a great book.Texasville is a great book! I was more engaged by the characters than I was in The Last Picture Show and I laughed out loud several times while I read it. Texasville is a sequel, but it can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of The Last PIcture Show. I might even suggest that you read Texasville first and then grab a copy of The Last Picture Show to see what that's like.In some ways the Thalia books are McMurtry's version of Updike's Rabbit novels. But I sure don't recall laughing out loud at Rabbit's trials and I certainly didn't miss any stops while I was reading them.

After reading "Last Picture Show" and realized it was the first book of a trilogy, I got "Texasville" asap and loved it too. His writing style and humor is just fun to read, and I have now started "Duane's Depressed". There might even be a few lessons about how people work in these books too.

Larry McMurtry is a wonderful author. But, I am not telling anyone a secret with this revelation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Texasville. There were literally times that I laughed out loud, and my wife looked at me and asked what was so funny. Other times, I ached for Duane, the lead character. I feel as though I know these people personally. A great read.

A clear departure from the violence of the "Lonesome Dove" tetralogy or even the sadness of a dying town depicted in "The Last Picture Show", "Texasville" is a comic novel that culminates in a catastrophically hilarious Centennial celebration that goes terribly wrong. The battle of the sexes is clearly illustrated in this macho Texas town where women always seem to have the upper hand. Many of the "Picture Show" characters are revisited in their middle years, but many new characters are introduced as well, including Duane's beautiful and charming wife, Karla, and his children, the beautiful lady killer, Dickie, and the demons on wheels, his teen-age twins, Jack and Julie.

Mr. McMurtry is such a phenomenal writer Fred's many of his works that is read many of his works
