Are you ready for the theory (or theories) of everything? And not just theories, but insights into almost everything under the sun, and innumerable examples and illustrations. My favorite is the section in which Fat Tony debates Socrates, a near demolition of Platonic thought and it's attendant fetish for Top-down thinking. You won't agree with everything in this work, but the open minded will find it highly stimulating, even inspiring--a work of tremendous sweep and power.

One of my three favorite books of the summer. The concept of antifragile is amazing. It will provide the more random areas of your life with a justification that may not exist. Although Taleb builds on earlier books regarding randomness and black swans, the content of this book can easily stand by itself. I should warn you though, if you are like me, I went back and bought several of his earlier books.I read the kindle version and listened the it on Audible too. The only thing I did not like about this was that the Kindle version did not have page numbers in it unlike many current Kindle books. This is not Kindle's fault. I did love the way that the reader in Audible read the references as part of the text. Readers so often overlook footnotes and references.Reading on Kindle was fabulous. The ability to link references and people makes the reading a better experience.Okay, if you are going to read this book please extend the experience. Think YouTube too. Here's an example of what I mean - http://youtu.be/_MYTFWCbDKQ. If you watch this you'll see how much extended value there can be in this kind of activity. Okay, I know what you're thinking, you think you can just go to YouTube and watch. Of course you can. Be the book is better and the book will help you become selective. Two last things:1) successful fragilistas won't like Taleb - but they too should know his messages.2) some of his behavior will appear pompous and arrogant. So what, it is the content and if his personality turns you off during interviews and presentations, read the book. His content to too good to miss. Now, if you care, my two other favorites for this summer were, "A fighting Chance" and "the Goldfinch". I wonder what Mr. Taleb would think of being in this group?

To reveal creeping determinism, or `abstract blindness' I am reminded of the WWII bombers that returned from German bomb runs. The ones that returned were all shot-up and full of holes. The General asked, `what can we do to protect the bombers'? A smart mathematician said put extra armor where there are "no" holes. Where There are No Holes! Of course, Antifragile and the work of the author are about being aware of the unintended consequences that we can not see, or even contemplate. When looked thru the lens of abstract blindness, one realizes that the bombers that did not return were the ones with holes in them that no one could see. This dove tails into the Antifragile's frequent reminder that absence of evidence (of harm), is not the same as evidence of absence -- meaning (in my view) just because there is 30 years of data that says it has never happened before does not mean it will not happen. This is the turkey's view prior to Thanksgiving Day problem - from Black Swan.As for Seneca's Asymmetry, if you have more to lose than benefit from fate then you are fragile. Seneca's practical counter to being fragile was to go through mental exercises to write off possessions, so when losses occurred he would not feel the sting. And also use a barbell approach meaning keep the extremes on the ends and therefore avoidance is in the middle. This fine book also has a considerable amount of discussions on health matters that range from Hormesis (think vaccines), medications that we don't need, your private doctor may be your worst enemy, non-linear activity (anti-marathon training), and much more.If you consider this the 3rd book in the series of Fooled By Randomness and Black Swan, then the Trilogy Was Worth The Wait. All in a worthy book for either the philosopher's, reader's, or investor's book shelf - along with the a few below.Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life by Nassim Nicholas Taleb (Halo Effect),The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb (Economic Game Changer),Ubiquity: Why Catastrophes Happen by Mark Buchanan (Power Laws),The (Mis)behavior of Markets by Benoit Mandelbrot (A Fractal View of Risk).Disclosure: I received a free advance copy prior to publication.

Descriptions did not match pictures, otherwise it was a short informative, but not comprehensive read.

A small book with lots of information. The wording was difficult to understand at times though and the book would have benefited from a thorough proofreading.

I received this book at no charge from Amazon for my Kindle. It was an enjoyable read. Thank you to the author for providing the material free for Kindle readers.

This book was written with such ease of understanding. I am eager to practice and share my results and knowledge with others.

Very clear and descriptive information on chakras. I enjoyed the pictures of the Madras and the additional spiritual insight. Thank you

Very informative with pictures and explanations.

I am new to meditating so this was an easy to read and understand manual. I was able to start with the correct breathing methods right away. The author seems like she was right there encouraging you not to give up.

I started meditating this year, but I had never heard of or used Mudras in my practice. But, this changed after reading this book. Each mudra is fully explained and clearly demonstrated in each chapter. I found them to be a simple addition to my meditation practice.

Pastor Soaries is well qualified to write a book of the work he has been doing most of his life. He 'walks the talk' which is becoming rare today. #6,319,296 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I would only suggest this book if you have a lot of patience and determination to make sense of the authors code. The source code has bugs, and many many memory leaks. It isn't even formatted correctly. In order to make sense of it, I had to tab and format it correctly. Not fun. There are much easier ways to do animation than what the book describes. If you really want to know how X files work then get this book, otherwise skip it.

I buy this book because I can not find another book whit animation on direct x, but you need install the direct x sdk 9 to run the examples, and a good video card, if you not, show you many error of memory, in some cases this book are helpfully if you not have any idea how to made an animation or cloth simulation, I recommend this book for a start into direct animation, the book only help you to take a path to start into game develop, because are very hard to find a book how to show you made animations, there is many things and ideas you can save from this book to use like a guide for a start.

First of all the retail price of the book is too much. The last section (video on texture and cloth simulation) which he thinks are the most advanced are just pretty lame. He could have better described how to export a skinned mesh better. The ragdoll effect as given is not combined with an animated model making it a bit less useful. The book does cover a lot on using skeletal animation that was definately not covered in other books that I've bought on the subject. I'm also glad that it has no intro to DX section. PS: Who wrote the 5 star review, the author?

Advanced Animation with DirectX is not a good book at all. The author did a terrible job on the skinned animation parts and the later parts of the book is just plain bad. The beginning was ok but the code was not right. I tried to implement some of the stuff at the beginning and it didn't work. When I sat down and thought about the problem at hand and how to do it, I got everything working smoothly without using anything that was done is the book (which means the book was a waste of money). Who ever gave this book 5 out of 5 stars must be the author or a friend.

The timing of this book's release is unfortunate because Microsoft made huge changes to DirectX 9 during 2004. As a result, the code in this book is completely obsolete today.

This is not an in-depth book of science, but it does contain interesting and not well know facts along with sweet drawings of many animals, plants, etc found in nature. Recommend for ages 4-11ish. Note: some writings are done in that somewhat foreign language called cursive. ;)

We absolutely LOVE this nature journal! It is perfect for our nature study time and my daughter loves using it. Absolutely will be buying more!!

We love supporting other homeschool families. This is perfect for what we wanted.- I even got one for myself!

I honestly could’ve found free sheets on Pinterest and printed this out myself. Every single page is the exact same. It’s still super cute and I like that it has a cute cover to the book bc if I were to do it myself it wouldn’t. I guess for the price it okay and worth it.

Review

"Roger Kahn has achieved the near impossible in his "The Boys of Summer" by writing two splendid books in one, neither of which, strangely enough, is a sports book although baseball is the central theme of both. To Mr. Kahn, 'people' is the name of the game, and it's a game he plays with brilliance, insight and thoughtfulness. To say that I 'enjoyed' the book is to say that winning a World Championship is 'interesting', owing a derby winner 'nice', and starring in the Super Bowl 'fun'."-- Bill Veeck"Kahn's book is marvelous...a splendid historical work. It is about youthful dreams in small American towns and big cities decades ago, and how some of these dreams where fulfilled, and about what happened to those dreamers after reality and old age arrived. It is also a book about ourselves, those of us who shared and identified with the dreams and glories of our heroes."-- Gay Talese"What most people look for in a book is a good story. Roger Kahn gives us about fifteen of them woven into one coherent narrative that is moving and funny and sentimental (about people and things that merit sentiment) and cynical (about those that don't)."-- Ring Lardner, Jr. "To writer Roger Kahn, the old Brooklyn Dodgers National League baseball team is a forever a priceless violin and he is the bow which must play upon it. This isn't a book; it's a love affair between a man, his team, and an era."-- "Christian Science Monitor""A work of high purpose and poetic accomplishment. The finest American book on sports. I commend it without qualification."-- James Michener"The "Boys of Summer" is a book of life . . . beautifully and above all . . . respectfully observed."-- Paul Hogan"A work of high purpose and poeticaccomplishment. The finest American book on sports. I commend it without qualification."--James Michener"The best team the majors ever saw, a team so extraordinary that Marianne Moore wrote poems to it--the Brooklyn Dodgers of the 1950s...A moving elegy!"--"New York Times"Not just another book about baseball or a boy growing up to like baseball, but a book about pain and defeat and endurance, about how men anywhere must live."--Peter Prescott, "Newsweek

About the Author

Roger Kahn, a prize-winning author, grew up in Brooklyn, where he says everybody on the boys' varsity baseball team at his prep school wanted to play for the Dodgers. None did. He has written nineteen books. Like most natives of Brooklyn, he is distressed that the Dodgers left. "In a perfect world," he says, "the Dodgers would have stayed in Brooklyn and Los Angeles would have gotten the Mets."

I have read over 70 baseball books (this doesn't include yearly reviews or annual previews). I'm embarrassed that I didn't read this until I was 40. If it isn't the best baseball book I've ever read, it's certainly one of the finalists. This was published in 1972. The paperback version has several codas, including a few pages written in the early 90s (a where are they now) and then another one from a few years later about the death of Pee Wee Reese. In that final epilogue, Mr. Kahn wrote that his son died at 22 from heroin in 1987. Pee Wee called him up and said, "I just wanna say from the fellers that we are all very, very sorry."This was Mr. Kahn's first book. It starts with his parents (and grandfather) and living growing up in Brooklyn in the shadow of Ebbets Field. He writes lovingly of his parents and his childhood. He becomes a Dodger fan and peppers his father with questions and requests. His father provides many wise answers that also serve as guidance for life. In his early 20s, he gets a job with the NY Herald Tribune (at the start of the book, he wrote, "I covered a team that no longer exists in a demolished ball park for a newspaper that is dead."). He learns to write at the heels of a number of excellent reporters. Mr. Kahn covered the Dodgers on a daily basis during the 1952 and 53 seasons - they lost in the series both years to the Yankees. He left the paper and the team (but still rooted for them, of course) before the 54 season began. The Dodgers broke through and won the World Series in 55 and then moved to LA after the 57 season. The first half of the book covers his childhood and his two years following the team. The book is chock full of wonderful lines and keen insights about life, the passage of time and death. The title of the book is taken from the first line of a Dylan Thomas poem: "I see the Boys of Summer in their ruin." The second half of the book follows Mr. Kahn around America as he visits with all of the old players he covered. They are in the mid 40's and early 50's when he meets them -- their lives have traveled a variety of different paths. The players reflect on their times as ball players, ask about their teammates, and discuss the great successes and tragedies of their lives. Though the athletes are only middle aged, they are long past their glories. This ages them more so than their non-athletic peers. It's a beautiful book. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I have read this book several times over the years. I felt like reading it again but couldn't find my copy. I ordered one from one of Amazon's used book outliers and have now read it again. This book is essentially about several of the great and near-great players of the 1952-1953 Brooklyn Dodgers and what they were dong in life after their playing days were over. The author Roger Kahn interviewed these players circa 1970. As a young boy growing up in Southern California, I fell in love with baseball and especially the Brooklyn Dodgers. Who knew they would move to SoCal?I loved Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, PeeWee Reese, Gil Hodges, Carl Furillo, Roy Campanella and all the other Dodgers of the early fifties. This book relates how the "Boys of Summer" adjusted to being regular people after their days of fame ended. Kahn also talks about his early days of becoming a reporter. A great read for fans of the Dodgers and people who were following those great teams.

The Boys of SummerBy Roger KahnKindle edition5 StarsThe Boys of Summer is the story of the Brooklyn Dodgers when the best came to play baseball: Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Carl Furillo, Gil Hodges, Billy Cox, Roy Campanella, Carl Erskine, Clem Labine, Billy Cox, Jackie Robinson. That’s right sports fans, “Brooklyn Dodgers”. At one time there were 3 MLB clubs in New York City: The Brooklyn Dodgers, played at Ebbets Field, The New York Giants played at the Polo Grounds, and The New York Yankees, played at Yankees Stadium. All but one left for California in the 50’s and 60’s: The Yankees.Roger Kahn has written an excellent history of the times and players of The Brooklyn Dodgers. A reporter for the Herald Tribune in 1951, Kahn was assigned to cover the team, which meant he was at every game, both at home and away. He traveled with the team, coaches and management, having first hand access. In the first part of the book, he covered players abilities, Penant races and World Series games in some detail. But I enjoyed the second and last part of the book where he met with each of the players after they left the game, interviewed them and talked of their memories of playing, what it was like once they left. The players had a love hate relationship with writers because of how their play might be described in the morning edition: as hero or goat. The writers also walked a fine line. If they dropped a bomb about a rumor trade of a player in the papers, before the player heard about it, this could dry up their sources pretty quick. All of those Dodgers to a man accepted Kahn and welcomed him in their homes. The Dodgers got their name from pedestrians “dodging” the fast trolley cars to get to Ebbets Field in the early 1900’s. They were the first to add lights at the stadium for night games and they were the first to break the color barrier and hire a black player, Jackie Robinson. Its hard to imagine the strenghth it took for Robinson to sign, even more than the risk the Dodgers took with this revolutionary move. But Robinson had come, not to play baseball, but to be the best player ever, and not to win games but to beat the opponent. He was such a stellar player that he was quickly accepted by the wishy washy Brooklyn fans and attendance soared. Yes he was playing pro ball, but he had huge obstacles to overcome that only a certain kind of individual would have the innate tools to survive. Imagine if you will, being a member of the team, but could not stay in the same hotel or eat in the same restaurants, or ride in the same railroad car as the rest of the team. When Jackie played at opposing team baseball parks, fans and the other team would call him names and throw things at him because of his skin color. This book was pure nostalgia for me. I was a young boy when the Dodgers played in Brooklyn and later on I listenend to Pee Wee Reese, one of those stellar Dodger short stops, call the games on TV after he retired from baseball. If you love baseball and its history you’ll love this book.

This is one of my favorite theoretical books! I find Cohen's book offers great insight into monsters and why we both love and fear them. It's very relevant to border studies, the abject, third spaces and liminality. I return to it in my own work on a regular basis because not only is it innovative but very clear for critical theory. I highly recommend it.

This is a great foundational text for monster theory. I used several essays extensively for a graduate project and to create a unit plan for teaching my AP Lit class.

While I did have to buy this book for a class a few years ago, it is still a book I enjoy to read once a while to this day. It has many different helpful ways that can help expose a different way of thinking to a person and helps to open conversation in an area that most people don’t seem to think about, especially talk about. I enjoyed the topic and the conversations it started very much.

Arrived in good condition.

Critical theory, in my view, often walks a line between providing real insight into art and society, and getting caught up in it's own self-referential obfuscation, substituting wordiness and word play for true insight. I think that's what has happened here. At least for me, I had to work too hard to find too little.I've read a lot of critical theory, and this type doesn't do it for me. But if you like theory to be art in itself, more about itself than the purported topic--in this case monsters and monstrosities--then you may, like the other reviewer, enjoy this work. But I prefer the work of Anijar, Barone, MacLaren, work that turns outward as well as inward.I suggest using the "look inside" feature to examine this book before buying. See if it's the flavor of critical theory that moves you.

This book provides insightful and new ways of looking at those beings deemed as monsters forcing readers to confront stereotypes and archetypes in a new way.

"Monster Theory" is a collection of essays which provide useful ideas and concepts if you are interested in making sense of this time of monsters we live in.Of course, monsters have been with us for some time, and the book contains essays dealing with vampires, Frankenstein's monster and Beowulf. There is also an essay on Jurassic Park and the fascination of dinosaurs. For me, the most useful text by far was the one by editor Jeffery Jerome Cohen, in which he described seven theses on the role of monsters in culture.I found the concepts in this book useful when writing papers about such diverse topics as children's literature (monsters and the monstrous in children's lit) and popular culture (the role of the vampire).Monsters embody borderline concepts, things we worry about. Monsters are the things that trouble us at night. Whenever society is insecure and needs to find a new balance, monsters stalk the perimeter of the fence we have put up around "normality" and challenge us to alter the demarcations.I feel that anyone interested in monsters and their role in culture would profit from reading this book - and not just the student or scholar of popular culture.
