This book is a great lesson in ecosystems and homes, and would be great for preschool and elementary age kids. I just wish that there were more of a conclusion at the end around appreciating animals in their own homes...
My children and I really enjoyed this book. Apart from the very nice story and beautiful illustrations, it got them thinking about why houses are built the way they are, taking care of different species as pets, the food chain, etc. We had varied topics to discuss and some days later the story came up while discussing something else. As a Teaching student who's very interested in children's books, I'd recommend that you read it aloud first asking from time to time "What do you think will happen next?" and only then show the kid/s the pictures.
Such a classic story of a boy whose imagination goes wild creating a habitat for his salamander in his bedroom. Quality book for kids of all ages.
It gives a very strong imagination for kids.
I've recommended this to so many parents of little kids who want to bring creatures home. It's gentle and beautiful and creates such understanding of the needs of wild things. Highly recommend.
