I’ve used many books to prep my kids for the HSPT. This one is the worst. The tests are harder than other books, which can be good but can also be discouraging. But more importantly, the tests are rife with errors - every time we grade a math we find at least 2 that we marked wrong based on the key but when looking at the explanation the key is sting. Or there are two right answers presumably due to typographical errors in the question.

There are too much errors, contradictions, and wrong explanations. My son was confused.Attached picture shows duplicate (a)s, instead of (c).

This is a thorough guide that gives comprehensive advice and testing experience for three tests, the COOP, HSPT and TACHS. I like the way it sets up a schedule starting a month before taking the test and also provides a strategy as two of these can only be taken once. The HSPT can be taken twice so 8th graders should try in the fall and have the back up of the spring test available.I like that the practice tests and answer worksheets are on paper and easy to copy. I copied the answer sheets just to go through the motions of answering the questions. It was hard for me not to write all over the tests because that is what I have always taught students to do. The TACHS does not allow you to write int he test booklet. But otherwise, circle, underline, scribble. It all helps you work out things in your head. For practical purposes, you can't do that if someone else is going to use the practice book behind you. Like we had 2 ACT takers in a row in our house and it was useful to have them do online testing practice because they didn't mess with each other.I don't generally do the online testing when I am preparing to take a test, just because the experience is not the same and I like to practice on paper for paper tests. But I do know people like to have that option available. In this book, the paper test does emulate the experience and they even suggest taking the practice test as close to test situation as you can. It just makes it more effective.

"McGraw-Hill Education Catholic High Entrance Exams" focus on prep for the three entrance exams given to eighth graders for potential entrance to parochial schools. I like that the authors keep the explanations for each test to 3 brief opening chapters. That way, the potential tester can focus on the test that he/she needs to prep for. I like the organization of the prep guide in handling what is common between the tests and what is unique. Then they have the practice exams for the specific exams. It is a clear and straightforward prep guide but make sure to take time to read the overview at the very beginning to plan the study but also how to look for any updated information.

Good resource for the catholic high school entrance exams. However, my experience with McGraw-Hill as an ACT and SAT resource is that it is somewhat easier than the actual test. I would go to the actual homepage of the tests or look at the booklets often provided to the students trying out for these high schools with sample questions on them- they are in a slightly different format and a bit harder than what this book offers. A rigorous EOCs for first year high school courses would be an excellent sources of prep.

This is a great book. At first I thought I was really smart because I thought it was a book to get into college and not high school and thought the questions too easy. After I figured out it was to get into high school, I viewed it a whole lot differently. They must cover a lot more stuff than the regular schools do because this is pretty advanced questions. I don't see how a kid could possibly pass the test without studying this beforehand and if they haven't already been going to a Catholic school, I'm not sure they could even pass, because I'm pretty sure the regular schools are not this advanced. I know they weren't when I went and I still don't think they are today. It has 6 practice test and covers problems with simple explanations and there are nearly 600 pages to cover.

This book includes three catholic high school entrance exams for review. We were particularly interested in the Coop. This has been an ideal extra study guide as someone with a learning disability has been using. We have not compared it to the actual test, but the material is great and comes with practice tests as well.

This book was reviewed by a Catholic middle school teacher who regularly helps students prepare for entrance to Catholic high school:Included are many good practice exams, though they are of a variety of formats: Note that most readers will only need to deal with a single exam format (whichever one their target Catholic high school requires). Chapters are broken down into "what to expect" sections for the various exams. Much of the information provided, both on exam structure and on the academic subjects would have been just as easy to find on-line. Unfortunately, there is no index by subject.

This book is one of the best out there for cultivating deep levels of thinking and authentic learning.

Every year, the majority of the students in my non-AP U.S. History class confess that they find history classes boring and irrelevant: of what use is it to learn about events and developments in our past? Meanwhile, so many of our country's young citizens struggle to understand current and political events and developments.I don't blame them: although I was a dutiful student and did what was necessary to get a good grade in my U.S. History, I was convinced it was a huge waste of time. It was not until years later when I was reading about the events and developments at the time, that I started to recognize many of the same CONCEPTS we had learned about in history class. Times change, actors change, and issues change, but CONCEPTS are fairly timeless and universal. I finally realized that my U.S. History class HAD been useful after all--studying history helps one identify patterns, underlying tensions, and the causes and effects of these (in other words, CONCEPTS) that can give one a significant amount of insight and perspective on how these same concepts will play out today and in the future.But why did I have to be 10 years out of college to realize this on my own? Why wasn't objective explicitly explained, and why didn't my high school teachers explicitly teach me how to transfer concepts from history to the present and future, use history to understand the present and the future?Luckily, we now have a guidebook that breaks down how to do this: Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding, Secondary: Designing Lessons and Assessments for Deep Learning! I had been trying to use history to understand the present and future for several years, but it was on a "stumbling through the dark", ad hoc, trial and error manner. I particularly enjoyed the section talking about gratitude is the antidote to depression. From this resource I was able to learn more about ways to overcome depression which I will be able to implement into my life. For the price it's a good value. Honestly speaking, I am now in a low point in my life. My workplace doesn’t seem to be a conducive place to be in anymore and every morning I just drag myself like a zombie. My grandfather is under depression. He just sits in a room and not come out of there, he did not talk to anyone, do not work anything. It is really very difficult especially for those around him. In particular, it is such in winter, in summer it is much better, but this year he did not improve either in summer or in winter. This book can really have a positive effect on your life. Everyone with depression should read this book. I learnt a lot from this book.

This is a really good book written by somebody who's been there, knows what derision is all about and tells their story on how they learned to get out of that. The author has many stories that we can learn from and apply to our every day lives.

The writing was so bad, I wasn't able to finish the book. The tone was also very condescending.

This is a good message with some approachable long term ideas. But there are parts of the book that are the same-word for word. Chapter 4 isn't even a chapter, just half of chapter 3.
