How many times have groups of people said "So... uh... which idea is going to go forward, yours, mine or hers"?Doesn't that sound horrible? We all know that great collaboration is not consensus and it is not picking who's idea goes forward. It is the fantastic synergistic magic that happens when people can create and conflict in positive ways to create something new.There are so many books on collaboration. We use many of them in our Master of Design graduate program. Books like Patterson's Crucial Conversations, Rosenberg's Non-Violent Communication, Keltner's Power Paradox and any of Brene Brown's books provide insights into what contemporary collaboration and leadership is. None of those books, however, are written for designers.What the Sherwins have done is taken many of these powerful ideas, and translated them and built on them, and run them through their Sherwin's designification machine and published an excellent book for designers (and creative people) about how to turn groups into teams. This book is accessible from day one, and you could even flip to a page and try something out without a big commitment. I'd love to see this book in every designer's project space (and washroom) to help people help make the world more wonderful through design.And what a pleasure to write the first review!
David Sherwin and Mary Sherwin's book is a breath of fresh air on a fall morning as you sip a tea or coffee on a porch watching autumn leaves fall. Giving 6 stars isn't possible so, I purchased 5 copies to gift and anticipate needing more. The book tactically anchors in its methods and process something essential yet intangible that we design intentionally or intuitively at work every day - our relationships with folks on our team/s. Fun and no-nonsense, modular and comprehensive, its methods invite creative interpretation, AND they are immediately actionable. While particularly suited for designers, this book is open to anyone who wants to bring any team closer together and realize better outcomes for their organization. See the headline!
