I TORE THROUGH THIS ONE! Not kidding, picked it up Friday night, finished Saturday night. I loved this story, I was worried it'd be the typical teenage drama stuff but no, this is very complex and jaw-dropping. With every page I'd be more and more interested in what happens next. Plus! The ending, holy crap the ending had me in tears but also amazed and proud at the same time. A personal emotional roller coaster for me. 100% recommend!

I'm a big fellow. 5'10", a few extra pounds. My students say I'm intimidating, which to me is a scream. My favorite genre is murder mysteries. As such, I have no idea what drew me to this book.I'll tell you a secret. I have moments where, for some reason, I am reminded of some mind numbingly stupid or embarrassing thing I did or said years--decades--ago, and the self-mortification paralyzes me. I squeeze my eyes shut and wish I could go back in time, and with my adult perspective inside my youthful mind and body, fix things. I know I cannot, and maybe THAT is how I ended up downloading this book and reading it in my spare evenings over less than three days.It's about Sam (Samantha Emily) Kingston, one of a quartet of popular high school girls, each of them shallower than a puddle after a light drizzle. They attend a party on a rain-soaked, icy cold February Friday evening at the home of a classmate whose parents are away, they all get stinking drunk, and they are killed in a wreck on their way home.Except....Sam is certain she is dead, but she wakes up again on the Friday morning of the day of the party. At first, Sam believes the car crash and her death must have been a dream. But she and her friends perish once again. And once again, she awakens on the morning of the very same Friday. With each awakening, Sam gets the feeling that there are wrongs that she must correct, but she is never sure of what those wrongs are. Something new and unexpected happens each time, giving Sam a glimpse of a much better self than she had ever aspired to before.The book's air of verisimilitude is astounding. I teach students fresh out of high school, and the author's re-creation of high-school sounding dialogue is spot on. Big lug though I may be, I came away from this book caring about people whom I would have gone a long way out of my way to avoid when I was this age. I'll be damned, but this story was profoundly moving, a genuine balm to anyone who has ever wished for a chance to set things right.

Actual rating 3.25 stars.I started reading this book a few times, abandoning it and returning before making any head way. All the immaturity, the teen girl snarkiness and bullying was just so tiresome. Plus the Groundhog styled repetition of the same day lagged the pacing.I didn't particularly like our protagonist Sam for most of the novel. She wears the moniker 'bitch' unapologetically and seems to pinball from one social scene to the next swaying under the banner of peer pressure and grasping to remain at the precipice of the social hierarchy. Then about halfway through the novel things changed. Sam became much more interesting, her choices became more altruistic. I laughed so hard in her 'rebellious' day it added a much needed punch to a novel I was starting to find boring.The supporting cast felt all very teen - wrapped up in their own dramas and self-importance. So the characterization was bang on, though I had little patience for their carry on. Sheesh I felt so old reading this book.It was a pretty easy writing style, a plain easy beat once the pace picked up, I flew through the second half of the novel. Though I did like the tone ‘Before I Fall’ set: it glances at repercussions of behaviour, atonement, bullying, suicide, depression, compassion, and acceptance. For such a wishy-washy teen babbling premise, it alludes to some much more serious issues.I'd recommend the novel to lovers of YA who don't mind a slow developing story. Plenty of drama and hijinks. Weird in some places, but the cyclical structure of the story resolves everything nicely. And like the proverbial light in the opening scene, you see it coming and there is nothing you can do to avoid it.It’s a fairly chunky and clunky book, it manages to redeem itself. The cover art captures an air of mystery with just a portion of the face lying on the ground… though I would have liked to see it in cooler colours with some snow to reflect the pivotal scene in the novel. The font was on the smaller side and there seemed to be a lot of italicised lines, but it captured the ambience really well and helped keep the page count down from a heavy wrist-aching book.I watched the movie shortly after completing the novel, and have to say I slightly enjoyed the cinematic version of this story more…

I've always considered A Time to Kill Grisham's most riveting and thought provoking work but this is it's equal The only criticism I have of the book is the same criticism I have of all his work. And that is his endings are always weak and disappointing. I always feel as though he just getstired of the story and writing and just stops. Every time I'm let down after really enjoying the read until it abruptly end and leaves me thinking, No, not again! (Kind of like how Charlie Brown feels when Lucy pulls the football trick.)

This is a sequel to one of Grisham's best, "A Time to Kill." Not necessarily a prerequisite - this books stands just fine on its own. picking up a few years later, lawyer Jake Brigance and his family still haven't recovered fully from the side-affects of the Hailey trial in the previous book. Once again we have a suspenseful plot with the same theme of whether racism and greed will overwhelm the outcome of a legal battle steeped in 1980's Mississippi. Grisham is definitely an expert story-teller with vivid characters and twists that keep you interested in what 'should' be a tedious and boring lawsuit over a hand-written will. A wonderful blend of comedy, tears, drama, suspense and gut-wrenching angst. Your opinion of the verdict sways back & forth but just when you think the outcome is obvious - guess again!If you haven't read "A Time to Kill" yet (or watched the movie), you might want to read it first, because it is equally good and this book will be a bit of spoiler.

John Grisham's original work was outstanding. He then fell off with less than impressive work - almost like he was rushing to meet a deadline. Case in point, The Associate which ended horribly leaving loose ends all over the place (and I've successfully forgotten the other failures). But with Sycamore Row, it seems Grisham's got his mojo back. It holds your attention by not revealing what 8 year old Ancil saw until the very end and the question that's the elephant in the room all through the book is why Hubbard left all that money to Lettie. About half to 3/4 into the book you start to figure out the why he left it. But not until the end do you realize the significant of why he hung himself. All these things become significant in the end and the book wraps up well. Basically couldn't put it down and am looking forward to JG's next novel. Hope it's not a bust!

SYCAMORE ROW by John Grisham is a fantastic read. The story takes place in a small town in the deep South in the late 1980s. It centers on the suicide of a crotchety but wealthy old man, Seth Hubbard. Hubbard leaves a handwritten will, legal in Mississippi, with very detailed instructions on how to dispose of his assets down to specific instructions dealing with his funeral and burial arrangements. In the will he leaves ninety percent of his very substantial estate to his black maid, Lettie Lang. The problem is that Hubbard had a legal document drawn up a year earlier by a large law firm in Memphis leaving most of his assets at the time to his two children and their families. In the handwritten will he specifies that nothing is to go to his children who he says have not bothered to visit him in years. The prime character in the story is Hubbard's lawyer, Jake Brigance, who never met Hubbard but whose job now is to administer his client's handwritten will. It is the trial of the century for the small Mississippi town with the colorful local judge, Reuben V. Atlee presiding. Sycamore Row is one of those Grisham novels that you cannot put down. John Grisham is one of the finest fiction writers of our time—he has proven it again with this writing. I give this outstanding novel a 5-star-plus rating.

Last novel I read from Mr. Grisham was The Rainmaker. This one was okay, but man it took a long time to get set up. Trial scenes take time, I understand, but it didn’t deliver the way it should have. Big storyline, broad stroke characterizations, and some antics thrown into the equation, but about a quarter of the way in you start seeing people who are getting more in the way of the story and you start to wonder when things will get streamlined. You could read far worse books, I guess, but I was a little disappointed in how little return I got for all the effort. I have great respect for Mr. Grisham and the story he tells is rich, it’s just not my kind of story. Maybe I’m more disappointed by the numerous high star reviews that influenced my purchase. Will be reading another of his books shortly since it helps pass the time on the exercycle.

John Grisham has done it again!Without question, this book is absolutely phenomenal! I typically don't write reviews; however, I'm compelled to share my opinion. The storyline so rich with vivid details, riveting characters, and humor that I found myself reading it for hours at a time. I laughed, cried, felt sorrow and joy as I read from chapter to the next.I highly recommend this book as an addition to your personal library.Thank you John!

After reading many books by self-published authors, this professionally written and edited novel was a reawakening as to why certain authors have earned the attention and respect of big name publishers. I admire the talent and intelligence of John Grisham to weave an amazing story and write a page-turner with such great ease and finesse. Well done! If you haven't read his work yet, I highly recommend that you do. Although some of his books have been made into movies, as they say, the books are always better.

He’ll win.” Then you listen to the next lawyer and think exactly the same thing.The characters are so well drawn that you feel for them all. Before getting into my review, I want to say that I am super glad I did NOT read Tim Challies' 1-star review of this title until after I'd finished reading "Moving Mountains" cover to cover. Had I seen that review first, I would have thought twice about purchasing this book. That would have been a BIG mistake! Reading what Challies wrote caused me to wonder if he and I actually read the same book. It also gave me pause to wonder what his axe to grind with Eldredge might be.I am no John Eldredge groupie. There was a time when I followed and supported his ministry. But that was quite awhile ago now. So, I was surprised when Amazon recommended his latest book to me. I'm glad they did. The author's gift of words -- his voice -- shines through every page brilliantly!Eldredge makes it clear prayer is not a quickie wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am two minute sort of thing. He uses the word "intentionality" to relate this idea. The book is excellently balanced with supporting Bible passages and resources for further study. I found I'd already read a number of the books by other authors he recommends.He uses the phrase "there is a way things work" as an overall theme to connect the dots. I enjoyed this little creation to reveal that I was about to partake in one of those deep mysteries he'd uncovered. I sometimes need someone waving a caution flag that says "slow down... don't rush through this part."Another thing I like is Eldredge's use of his own experiences in prayer. He describes them and then provides the prayer words he uses. I find that immensely helpful, akin to standing on his shoulders, rather than having to flounder away on my own. Prayers he's developed are printed in full at the end of the book. I get the feeling he really does want his readers to delve into this prayer adventure.One thing I wish he had developed further was the idea of provision. One of the resources John offers is Dr. Ed Murphy's "The Handbook For Spiritual Warfare." It's one of those I mentioned earlier that I've read. Appendix B in the back of that book is a prayer that I think might be one of the inspirations to Eldrede's "Daily Prayer." There are several parts to it emphasizing God's provision which are only slightly implied in "Moving Mountains." I'd prefer he plumb the amazing provision of God deeper.John Eldredge has sold millions of copies of his bestseller, "Wild At Heart." This book is on that level and I hope he sells millions of "Moving Mountains," too. My recommendation is that you read the entire book cover to cover first. That way you'll have the 30,000 foot view... the big picture. Then go back and take it slowly, applying..... no, PRAYING.... what John Eldredge has revealed.As I said in the headline, based on what I've gleaned from this book, if I had been told I was terminally ill, I'd want John Eldredge praying for me. "Moving Mountains: Praying with Passion" holds my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

I have read many of John Eldredge's book. They have challenged the way I see Christ, mostly for the better. I normally do not feel uncomfortable with his writing. I read all books with a Berean perspective. Some of the teachings within this book take steps into extra-biblical methodologies, or at best thinly connected scriptures, which I have a hard time connecting the relevance of. He skirts the edge of some teachings within charismatic circles, which he states and then almost contradicts himself so as to not to offend non-charismatics.On the positive side of things. John teaches that Jesus is not a distant God. He is an intimate and close friend that loves and cares for you. He encourages one to approach prayer in a conversational way. He clearly shows how God speaking directly to you is biblical and normative. He teaches you to pray expectantly, which all true believers have a right to do. I have grown deeper in my prayer life as a result of this book and his Beautiful Outlaw book.What I am finding difficult to reconcile scripturally: His Daily Prayer is formulaic and long-winded. This flies in the face of what Jesus taught in Matthew 6:7. Proverbs 10:19 might apply as well. It cannot be for God's benefit. His implication is that it is for you to center yourself. Maybe it is just me, but recitation of a long winded script doesn't focus me. It moves me away from Christ, not towards him. It also take a LONG time. If I was a theologian or in ministry, my day would allow time for the 15-20 minutes to go through the DAILY prayer. I just can't see where this is God honoring.This book takes you into the area of binding and loosing and to claiming authority. This is very controversial. There are very reputable theologians on both sides of this camp. Beware and research prayerfully on this. Satan likes you to either think he is not there or that he is behind every tree. Many who get into binding and loosing see him behind every tree. Jude 9 applies when dealing directly with Satan. If another archangel isn't going to tread into "binding" Satan, should we?Praying in tongues: I think John handles this very well. My personal experience in this area is that it doesn't occur through my will. There have been times when the Spirit has taken over me in prayer. Most times (and all times when I am publicly praying), it is in my everyday language. He just takes over my mouth. I have had a time or two when another language formed in my mouth. Never were they when I was praying before others. Of course the bible states that such times (praying in tongues before others) must have an interpretation. What John teaches in this respect does seem to be consistent with my experience, as if my opinion has any weight. But this is my chance to speak. Write your own review if you disagree. Again, this is an area of much controversy.In summary, I believe you need to read many of John's other books for this book to be helpful. No Christian author has it all correct. Test everything through scripture and in prayer. Also understand, just as John points out that Jesus never healed the same way each time, he also doesn't work with each person the same way. He's bigger than that. If you are looking for a formula on prayer, there isn't one.

This book is great and phenomenal. If your prayer life feels sort of dull read this book or get the audio book and listen to it. Ponder what he's saying. Go back into your Bible and look up the scripture references. Ask the HOLY SPIRIT of GOD who raised CHRIST JESUS from the dead to show you and teach you all things just as CHRIST promised he would and it will change your prayer life forever. It's not John's book that does that but it's a guide back into the TRUTH, the WAY and the LIFE who changes it.

It is not possible for me to reduce to words or overstate the significance of the message in "Moving Mountains." It has met me squarely in my brokenness, and forever altered my understanding of prayer.Like a superior sermon one experiences when you feel as if the pastor's teaching was directed specifically at you, nearly every chapter overflowed with what I need to learn and comprehend about prayer. And I have only now read it through once completely.Next move is to go back and begin even more serious study. This is a book, like the Bible from which most of it is adroitly woven, that will be dog eared, highlighted and referenced again and again. God had used John Eldridge mightily herein.

I am both reading and listening to this book and have done so several times, absorbing more each time. Shortly after I started reading this the first time, my husband entered the hospital for what ended up being almost a month and two surgeries. I literally searched through this book to find models of prayer for different situations and prayed through many of them....sometimes I was so tired or "brain scrambled" that I needed rhe words in front of me....God is indeed good and I praise God for John's obedience in writing this, (and the annointing that I see in his writing).
