Review

Honorable Mention, ASJA 2017 Writing Awards "A searing, important, and eminently readable exploration of China's one-child policy." — NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF, NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS “The policy itself remains a monument to official callousness, and Fong’s book pays moving testimony to the suffering and forbearance of its victims.” — NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW "Not to be missed ... [Fong] combines tough, broad economic analysis with individual stories." — ECONOMIST / 1843 “A timely, important work that takes stock of the one-child policy’s damage…ONE CHILD is, like the policy’s abolition, long overdue, and Ms. Fong was the perfect person to write it.” — WALL STREET JOURNAL “Fong’s fine book is a moving and at times harrowing account of the significance of decisions taken by a small coterie of men with too much faith in science and ideology, and too little in humanity.” — GUARDIAN “Fong writes eloquently and with an authority that reflects her knowledge of many cultures ... A deeply moving account of a policy that looks set to haunt China (and the world) for decades.” — INDEPENDENT (UK) “With impeccable timing, [Fong's] new book offers a superb overview... Fong writes in an easy, accessible style, and in 200 pages takes us behind the scenes of the Sichuan earthquake, the Olympic stadium in Beijing, the dancing grannies, the migrant workers, the orphanages, the transnational adoption of Chinese baby girls, birth tourism, and surrogacy. She fills in the background to these familiar subjects with impressive research and interviews, conducted over many years.” — LOS ANGELES REVIEW OF BOOKS"Fong excels in telling the personal stories of others, providing the reader with insight into how an Orwellian policy, rarely understood by outsiders, has played out in the lives of over a billion people." — MS. “The country's one-child policy, to be officially phased out in 2016, created more far-reaching social distortions than even its most vociferous critics realized, argues Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Fong in this timely exposé of a reproductive regime whose inner workings Chinese officials have tried hard to keep under wraps… Finished just before the announcement of the policy's demise, One Child is a touching and captivating anthropological investigation of one of the most invasive laws ever devised.” — KIRKUS REVIEWS "Timely ... Compassionate ... Fong illumines individual grief and dignity ... [Her] human-scale portrayal of individual stories, weaving in her own fraught journey toward motherhood as well, makes for an approachable and edifying treatment." — LIBRARY JOURNAL “Mei Fong’s brilliant exploration of China’s one-child policy must change the way we talk about China’s rise. One Child is lucid, humane, and unflinching; it is vital reading for anyone focused on the future of China’s economy, its environment, or its politics. It not only clarifies facts and retires myths, but also confronts the deepest questions about the meaning of parenthood.” — EVAN OSNOS, National Book Award-winning author of Age of Ambition“Eye-opening, powerful, and utterly gripping, One Child had me hooked from page one. Mei Fong possesses a rare eye for the details that truly illuminate a story, the ones that most of us overlook. She writes beautifully and vividly, revealing sides of China I’d never imagined to exist.”— AMY CHUA, author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and The Triple Package “Babies are a strange topic for a weighty book about China. But Mei Fong’s moving and highly personal account of the one-child policy will teach you more about the dysfunction and cruelty of modern-day China than any other. The story of her train ride to Sichuan Province with parents whose only children were killed in the 2008 earthquake is as heartbreaking as anything I’ve ever read about China.” — BARBARA DEMICK, author of Nothing to Envy “One Child is a critically important book about a major force that has shaped contemporary China, necessary reading both for policy experts and anyone interested in the future of one of the world's most important nations. But it is also a riveting read, written with the flair and compassion of a novel, that throws new light on the tough decisions we all face – and the joys we discover – in family life.” — ANNE-MARIE SLAUGHTER, author of Unfinished Business “One Child is a timely and informative look into China’s infamous effort to control its enormous population. But Mei Fong has also given us a wry, bittersweet, and often very personal look at how courtship, marriage, birth, and death interact in the post-Mao Chinese family. A lovely antidote to decades of chillingly cold Party-speak from Beijing.” — ORVILLE SCHELL, author of Wealth and Power “Mei Fong reveals the dark underbelly of China’s one-child policy. Whatever the original intentions, its implementation led to heartache, human rights abuses, and coercion of women across the country. Also poignant is the fact that the legacy of this state attempt to control reproductive rights may linger as an Achilles heel derailing its economic rise.”— PAUL FRENCH, author of Midnight in Peking"In human history, China’s one-child policy is unique. If you want to understand how it affected the lives of ordinary people and Chinese society as a whole, you need to read this. With its vivid character portrayals and incredible stories, One Child is an eye-opening book."— XINRAN XUE, author of The Good Women of China and Buy Me the Sky: The Remarkable Truth of China’s One-Child Generations "A highly impressive account of one of the controversial aspects of today’s China, combining policy analysis, extensive on-the-ground reporting, and personal experience."— JONATHAN FENBY, author of The Penguin History of Modern China and Tiger Head, Snake Tails

From the Inside Flap

An intimate investigation of the world s largest experiment in social engineering, revealing how its effects will shape China for decades to come and what that means for the rest of the world When Communist Party leaders adopted the one-child policy in 1980, they hoped curbing birthrates would help lift China s poorest and increase the country s global stature. But at what cost? Now, as China closes the book on the policy after over three decades, it faces a population grown too old and too male, with a vastly diminished supply of young workers. Mei Fong has spent years documenting the policy s repercussions on every sector of Chinese society. In One Child, she explores its true human impact, traveling across China to meet the people who live with its consequences. Their stories reveal a dystopian reality: unauthorized second children ignored by the state, only children supporting aging parents and grandparents on their own, villages teeming with ineligible bachelors. Fong tackles questions that have major implications for China s future: whether its Little Emperor cohort will make for an entitled or risk-averse generation; how China will manage to support itself when one in every four people is over sixty-five years old; and above all, how much the one-child policy may end up hindering China s growth. Weaving in Fong s reflections on striving to become a mother herself, One Child offers a nuanced and candid report from the extremes of family planning."

This book was a Christmas present for my wife. After returning from an academic residency in China, I wanted to help her understand how my students understood the nature of family, and to impart something of the struggles faced by poor families with more than one child. Sharing this was especially important since I had shoved my last thousand yuan into the hands of my twenty-year old interpreter en route to the airport, in the hopes that it might make more of a difference for his rural family (including a sister) than for us.I soon borrowed the book; my wife hasn't seen it since Christmas Day. I learned much. Clearly, Fong's access to China and her language fluency allowed her to share insights that would elude journalists without these qualities. Yet, none of the insights were novel, and I was disappointed with both her bias against China and her celebration of the suffering of rural poor who happened to be male. The anti-China bias manifested in (what seemed to me clumsy) attempts to find lessons about the one-child policy in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing -- both of which were painted in a very unfavorable light, with carefully chosen examples to highlight the horrors of modern China. While no doubt the response to natural disasters and the hosting of a global event reveal something about China worth knowing, these events don't seem the most natural flash-points for discussion of reproductive policy. It seemed more like an excuse to bash the CCP. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a stooge for communists. But such criticism seemed tangential and distracting in a book about reproductive policy, specifically. To put it a little differently, tracing the impact of the one-child policy on the 2008 olympics is like trying to understand Brown v. Board through the 1996 games in Atlanta, Georgia. Maybe there's something there, but I wouldn't start a book about desegregation that way.As to the hardships of the rural, male poor, the insensitivity of the author almost brought tears to my eyes and nearly prevented me from continuing. Fong described how some young men in an agricultural community were lured into marriage by scammers. Because of the reverse-dowry system in China, the parents of the boys had to take out loans they might have to work decades to repay. The women vanished with the money, leaving the families in financial ruin and new husbands humiliated and heartbroken. Fong wrote something to the effect that this was something of a victory for women in a country that had oppressed them. I couldn't help but think of my students in China, their parents, and the hardships they endure. To celebrate their suffering in the name of feminism seems as perverse as celebrating forced abortions in the name of patriarchy.Again, I learned much. But I would hesitate to lean too much on this reporting in building up an understanding of China.

While I am only one fourth of the way through this book, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a great deal about the ramifications of China's one-child policy. Of course, being at the age that I am, I was an adult when they adopted the policy and knew that eventually this was going to be a problem. One thing that truly resonated with me was Ms Fong's very accurate description of the difference between having one child and having many. In the Kindle edition it is between location 709 and 715. She states that Western ears might not understand how shidu parents ( those who lost their one and only child) feel more devastation than what the parents of several children feel upon the loss of one child. As the parent of an only child, I understand very well, even with my Western ears. I was unable to have any more children after the one. The people that I have voiced my feelings about this, that the loss of my one child would be an all-encompassing feeling of complete disaster and the loss would be greater than that of a parent who lost one child but has two more remaining. They would tell me that I just did not understand, that they love each of their children as much as I love my only. That I do not dispute. However, they do not understand, actually, that when one's only child is gone, there will be no consolation. No weddings, no graduations, no grandchildren scampering happily around a Christmas tree, being spoiled by Grandma and Grandpa. Its not that I love my one child more, but the utter sense of loss would be astronomically more devastating. For the Chinese, in their time-honored tradition of one generation tending to the generation prior and even the generation prior to that, this loss is far, far worse.I've often wondered how many Chinese citizens who did abort or commit infanticide to rid themselves of unwanted female infants are very sorry since those little girls are now quite the commodity. And those of us in the West cannot pretend that the woes that China will face because of this policy will not touch us over here on this side of the world. It will.

The amount of first-person material, from residents to privates to brigade commanders, brings this to life. You can feel the thick Italian mud on their boots as the weather turns bad yet they still have to send out patrols, to trigger machingun fire, so that mortars and artillery can take them out. Also, I strongly dislike Montgomery and his usage of the 8th Army purely for ego to try and beat the americans to Rome, but the book artfully dodges any political stuff like that, and sticks to the experiences of the soldiers in the trenches. That being said, the authors command and understanding of the overall strategic outlook in Italy, operational objective, etc is outstanding. This book nailed the battle from the boots to the the big picture.

This was a very engaging book that details the struggle between the Germans defending Ortona and the Canadians who sought to take it from them. With easy vocabulary and understandable descriptions, the author tells the story of how the fight for Ortona played out, how it affected those involved, and what it meant for Canadian patriotism. Both sides of the fight are elaborated on, with both German and Canadian personal accounts included. The few pages of black and white pictures help to further show what the fighting was like. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in WWII and for any history buffs looking for a quick and easy read, though it would still be appropriate for anyone else, aged high school and older.

Ortona Street FightGreat history. I will be there in 2015 as part of a battlefield tour. My military unit, The Saskatoon Light Infantry (MG) fought there and it is one of our Battle Honours.LCol Larry Wong (retd)

Really brings the history to life when you walk the streets of Ortona and follow the events as described in this book. My only complaint was that it was not long enough!

If you are looking to expand your World War II collection which is heavy on books set in Germany, this might be the book for you. In 137 pages, the author lays out the battle for Ortona, a small town on Italy's Adriatic Sea. The ten-day battle was fought in close quarters with Canadian forces being victorious over a German parachute unit. Chapters cover one or more days in the month leading up to the battle; most are chronological. Eight pages of black and white photos (two photos per page) show the grim reality of war; one photo shows a dead Canadian soldier on the ground. Teens history buffs will like this short look about how war affected Canadians, Germans, and Italians during that bloody December. This book is part of Orca Book Publishers' Rapid Reads series for older readers. The books use low-level vocabulary which is perfectly suited for teens and adults who are struggling readers or those who are learning English. Thanks to Puget Sound Council for this review copy.

It just wasn't long enough. Would like for it to give more information on the war part .other wise it was very good

Good read about a previously unknown action. The Canadian effort in WW2 is chronically overlooked and this book helps fill in the historical gap.

I am a self-proclaimed poetry snob, and thus find most books of poetry intended for young children to be less than ideal. This book-- National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry-- is the exact opposite of what I've found in most children's poetry books. This book is stunning, with a beautifual selection of poetry AND photographs that make the reader cry, smile, laugh, and sigh. Incredible. The book is organized into nine chapters of poetry and photography, and then also has an epilogue section with reference materials included.ALL chapters include a wide variety of poetry, including classic lyric poetry, haiku, free verse, and concrete poems. Every page has somewhere between one and three poems, as well as gorgeous National Geographic photos.Chapter 1-- "Welcome to the World"-- five poems about the beginnings of lifeChapter 2-- " the big ones"-- twenty-nine poems about big animals-- elephants, moose, horses, cows, gorillas, etc.Chapter 3-- "the little ones"-- thirty-two poems about small animals-- insects, arachnids, small mammals, etc.Chapter 4-- "the winged ones"-- twenty-eight poems about winged animals-- eagles, bats, hummingbirds, etc.Chapter 5-- "the water ones"-- twenty-five poems about animals in water-- sharks, oysters, alligators, etc.Chapter 6-- "the strange ones"-- twenty-eight poems about odd animals-- anteaters, porcupines, eels, etc.Chapter 7-- "the noisy ones"-- twenty-four poems about animals that make a lot of noise-- pigs, frogs, big cats, etc.Chapter 8-- "the quiet ones"-- twenty-three poems about quiet animals-- moths, panther, snakes, etc.Chapter 9-- "Final Thought"-- four poems about taking care of animals and the earthThat's 200 poems, with almost the same number of photos, that capture the beauty, the quirkiness, the power, the vulnerability, and the incredible diversity of animals that surround us on our amazing planet. This is a book of which I will be ordering additional copies to give as gifts to my many nieces and nephews. It is a treasure!

This is such a sweet book. I love it. The photographs in here range from sweet to crazy and I could spend hours just staring. There are about 175 pages so you get plenty to view. I have this book and their nature book and I like this one slightly more only because I love animals so much. They’re both great books. It makes a good coffee table book. I got ours for my young kids to look through. These are appropriate for any aged person, young or old. The poems cover numerous topics and range from just a few words to not quite a page. The poems are mostly written by poets and famous authors although it is a big mixture. For the price, it is totally worth it. This would definitely make a fantastic gift for animal and nature lovers alike.

This book is chockfull of poems--a poetical bang for one's buck, which I like very much. There have been a lot of books of animal poems over the years (e.g., Eric Carle's collection, Animals Animals), but some genius finally came up with the idea of pairing photos from National Geographic's vast collection with an anthology of poems, in this case one created by our current US Children's Poet Laureate. While many of the poems are from the past, by poets such as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Ogden Nash, more recent and current poets are also well represented. The poems are grouped in nicely parallel sections. After a brief set of introductory poems called "Welcome to the World," sections proceed as follows: "The Big Ones," "The Little Ones," "The Winged Ones," "The Water Ones," "The Strange Ones," "The Noisy Ones," and "The Quiet Ones." A section of four poems called "Final Thought" concludes the book. The fact that there are sections about noisy and quiet animals endeared the book to me even while I was still in the table of contents. But really, how do we judge a collection like this? Probably by looking at the overall qualities of the poems and the ways in which they represent their subjects. Variety of styles, voices, and ideas is important. Another consideration is the fit between illustrations and text. This book meets the criteria. For one thing, we get more than one take on certain animals. For example, the book offers four poems about elephants on a left-hand page with a really great photo of an elephant on the right--the photo, labeled "Asian elephant" in very tiny letters at the lower left, shows an elephant in a pond with green hills behind, tossing water onto his head with his trunk. The most well-known and oft-anthologized poem on the spread is "Eletelephony" by Laura E. Richards ("Once there was an elephant/Who tried to use the telephant--/No! No! I mean an elephone/Who tried to use the telephone..."). The other three poems are brief: an anonymous quatrain that has probably been around awhile comments on the "great big trunk" that "has no lock and has no key," but is carried everywhere by the animal. It is accompanied by two modern poems, another quatrain and a haiku.Of course, not every animal gets more than one poem. The variety of poems--and animals--is just right, however. I'll list two subjects from each section to give you an idea: cow and orangutan, ladybug and lizard, bat and hummingbird, starfish and walrus, armadillo and blue-footed booby, pig and raccoon, Luna moth and sloth. Some of the poems are silly and others are serious. The best poem in the book is arguably Lewis's own, a poem so comprehensive and gorgeous that it rightfully introduces the collection. Only you might miss it if you're not careful: it's printed on the front cover beneath the dust jacket. The poem is titled "Instructions Found After the Flood," and I'll give you just the first seven lines (of 19).Let the red fox quicken the seasons.Let the zebra buck and clatter in the cage of his skin.Leave the glass lagoons to the blue heron, whose eye is steady.Let jungles whisper jaguar, whose paw is velvet.Let the worm explore the globe, his apple.Let the spider embroider the air.Let tongue and belly be called reptile. You see what I mean? This poem, like the collection, is deeply satisfying. Not every anthology is as rich as National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry, but every public and school library and, I hope, personal library needs this book.

I bought this for my six year old granddaughter, who loves animals. When it arrived at my house, I fell in love with it. The pictures are superb! And the poems are delightful! Since my granddaughter doesn't live close, I don't know how much she has read it, but from my point of view it is a quality purchase!

my four grandchildren were born in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006. one, not the eldest, just completed Moby Dick. another, younger yet, just completed Never Kill a Mockingbird. a current favorite of my youngest yet is this outstanding collection of poems and images.prospective customers, please do your best to give your children and grandchildren books like this one, books like those within the series Poetry For Young People, books like those within the DK series, books rated five stars by most other Amazonians. once in a while a dud may disappoint you; but on balance you will be richly rewarded — for life.

Alex Deford was born in 1971 and died just 8 years later in 1980. She had Cystic Fibrosis. Alex: The Life of a Child is the story of her life as told by her father. When I was 12 or 13 I bought a copy of this book at a yard sale. I read it multiple times. For some reason I really loved the story of Alex. It’s been years since I last read it and it is still a great story. It is touching and told with such honesty and heartbreaking love. I highly recommend reading it.

This version of the book is abridged. Several key parts are left out, including Mr. Deford's discussion of how they came to adopt their daughter, Scarlett. This is a wonderful book, but the Kindle version is abbreviated. I recommend getting a version in print.

I first discovered this story in the December 1984 Reader's Digest in the featured book section. Even abbreviated, it was staggering. I saw the TV film later on, and still later, I found and bought the whole book. Since then, few January 19th's, the anniversary of her death, have passed that I have not thought of Alex and the family she left behind. I might do her memory more justice if I remembered her birthday instead, but her father did not write of her birth the way he did of her death.Frank Deford is an excellent and prolific writer of both fact and fiction and who makes personal to the reader every event he shares of Alex's life and death. Especially her death. Perhaps he didn't mean to make her death more poignant than her life, but it would be impossible to play it down. He paints nearly every hour of that last day of her life so vividly that I wondered if he was taking notes as it happened; he did, after all, keep a personal journal (no, I don't believe that he kept a notebook by the side of his dying baby's bed, only that he wrote it in such detail that it was as if he had done so.) These days, most people who die of lengthy, drawn-out illnesses die peacefully, only semi-conscious, doped up to the gills against unbearable pain. But though Alex might have been in pain, death did not take her peacefully. She didn't fight it, but neither did she go quietly. She was awake and aware to the very last second of her short life. As he said, she had spent so much of her little life dying that she wasn't about to miss the final act when it came. It was difficult enough to read when I wasn't yet a parent. It became even more meaningful after I became a parent. And then still more, when my daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor.Alex's story made me aware of cystic fibrosis, to the point that I felt compelled, once I was gainfully employed, to begin contributing a few dimes a year to the CF Foundation. It's never been very much, but neither has the foundation ever returned an uncancelled check to me claiming it was too little to accept.Other parts of the story make strong impressions, such as her ability to act and mimic anything she saw on a TV or movie screen; she could have been an actress, or maybe a dancer, as she loved to twirl around with grace and energy, "imaginating" a world in which no one suffered pain or death or had to do therapy. The deep and serious discussions with people outside of her family circle regarding death, God and Heaven and her love of jokes and humor and silliness. Her obsession with beauty and jewelry, and the outrageous insensitivity with which she was treated several times by cold and heartless doctors. Fortunately, I can say that today, through my own experience with doctors and hospitals, the medical staff in the pediatric departments treat their young patients with great respect and compassion. We could wish that ALL types of childhood ailments were written about as beautifully. There are other illnesses and disabilities that are just as deadly. He states at one point that "some diseases, even some fatal ones, don't put too many demands on the family of the patient." I felt like that wasn't quite a fair statement. If a loved one has a disease, particularly a potentially fatal disease to one's child, the demands of just living day to day with the knowledge that you will never be able to take for granted your child's good health is a pretty difficult burden to carry, not to mention the 'round-the-clock effort devoted to simply making the child comfortable. I do hope that I'm mistaken in his meaning of that statement. I can't imagine he would truly intend to dismiss other fatal illnesses children suffer as being easier to deal with. But then really, this story isn't really about sick children. It's not even about cystic fibrosis; it is about Alex, and there is only ONE Alex Deford. I know that there is, as he says, no value in losing your child. You don't gain anything meaningful from it. But because the rest of us have had the good fortune to stumble onto his story of Alex, many, many thousands of others have found meaning in their own lives as a result of Alex's life, however brief it was. The CF Foundation has also benefited. So, thank you Alex, for living, and thank you, Frank Deford, for sharing your daughter with the rest of us.

Very good book. This is the life of Alex, a little girl who dies of cystic fibrosis at age 8. It talks about the disease, what it does to the child, & the family. How it gradually takes over a person's life until there is nothing left. Alex was very brave & wise beyond her years. The author lets you into those final moments of her life, how she faced them & what it is like to watch your child die. A real tear jerker - not for the faint of heart.

I read this book as a child and bought the ebook last year. Strangely, it's not the version I remember reading when I was younger. I think they updated it and that is the one I remember. This must be the original. A good book. Sad but touching.

This account is a poignant look at a father-daughter relationship as a child born with cystic fibrosis struggles and ultimately loses her battle at the age of eight. Frank Deford is a former Sports Illustrated writer, and a former basketball star who became a writer in a more personal way. If you adores children and their indomitable spirits, this is a good book to read.

Alexandra Miller Deford was born on October 30, 1971. She died on January 19, 1980, sitting straight up and eyes wide open, with her parents, Carol and Frank at her side. Her life was taken by a genetic disorder, Cystic Fibrosis (CF), an incurable monster that ravaged her body and took everything from her except her amazing influence on others and the gut-wrenching story of her life.Alex: The Life of a Child was written by her father, and published in 1983. I have not read any other books or articles by Frank Deford; however, my guess is that this is the most poignant story he has every told.As a frail baby, when Alex was diagnosed with CF, she was not expected to live more than 5 months, but she was a fighter who struggled to be as normal as possible, never using her disorder as an excuse for not participating. Many of her childhood friends were influenced by Alex and are practicing the field of healthcare. Over the years this book has been used in schools to educate children as young as 10 years old. Having never met her, other people inspired by this book or the movie, visit her grave site and have joined the plight seeking a cure for CF.According to my research, CF is primarily a disease that is much more prevalent with Caucasians and "over 90% of the affected infants now survive beyond one year."Studies show "the life expectancy of cystic fibrosis patients has been increasing over the past 40 years. Life expectancy of individuals with adequate pancreatic function can be more than 50 years."Alex lived, loved and set an example for the ages. She was a poster child for CF. She was an angel of a daughter. Her brother, Christopher was her idol. More than anything she wanted to live and be free of CF. She worried about the impact of her death upon her loved ones. She lives on in the hearts and minds of those who know her story. Alex would be 41 now, had she survived, yet she will forever be the brave little girl who lives in the pages of this unforgettable story told by her father in a manner that will squeeze your heartstrings and make your eyes moist and glisten with sadness, joy and awe.Celebrate and enjoy the life of an angel!

This was the only supplement my professor suggested so of course I bought it. It did help me understand some concepts I missed in class but it was very heavy on theory. I think it may be better for an advance torts class and not the normal 1L course. It's not much use for daily or weekly studying but it did help at the end of the semester to kind of pull all my knowledge together.I pretty much walked out of the final and immediately donated it to the school's library for incoming 1L's but I regret it a bit. I think that it could have been more useful to me now that I'm a little more advanced.

My Professor recommended this supplement and like any good 1L, I ran out and bought it. All in all it was helpful, but I don't think I needed it in addition to my casebook and class notes. Still, if you're struggling to understand a concept in Torts, I'd pick it up.

Great product fast shipping

This book is good as a basic introduction to Torts. It's condensed, which makes it easy to read and understand. However, it lacks any discussion of certain areas, such as trespass (including status of invitees, licencees, and description thereof), as well as information regarding "special" duty owed by inkeepers, etc. If you want to study for the bar, or for even a first-year Torts exam, find another book. It would be ideal, however, as a supplement for your first-year Torts class.

This is going to save my GPA. Bless this damn book. If you don't want to let a professor slowly lead you around by the nose, get this and always be on top of what's happening.

Very informative book. Ads a bit more insight to Torts Law as a whole.

It's in good condition!

If you are looking for a book to go along with classroom discussion, this is not it. However, for first semester, this book covers the materials fairly well. By second semester coverage is spotty. Well written, but the real gem of this book is its coverage policy and the "why" of tort laws and court decisions. although some coverage is thin, this book covers the material in a way others lack. I actually read the first 100 pages prior to law school, but it became too difficult to understand for the amount of explanation given. If you have a policy based class this book is well suited as a supplement. If not, then use this more for policy and the first couple of months. Better supplements exist as you can read below.I used various supplements for this class. Before buying all of them, I would go to your law library and look them over, use them for your class and see if they are presented in a way that works for you. My biggest mistake was thinking by using supplements I would learn less or get screwed up. Professors tell you whether they like supplements or not, but if you use them to prepare for class, still at least go through the cases and take NOTES from what they say, you will do far better.I will explain the supplements I used and how I studied for class and the final. This was by far the best professor I have ever had, using hypos and working through them in class frequently. She taught like many of the supplements, which is why I relied on them less here then in other classes.First and foremost, Emanuel Law Outlines: Torts is great. It is amazing if keyed Emanuel Law Outlines: Torts keyed to Prosser, 11e to your casebook like mine Cases and Materials on Torts (University Casebook Series). This means the supplement follows along with your casebook and cases. In the first semester I read Understanding Torts to get a more in depth and overall explanation of the material covered. At times if my class covered less I would switch to Acing Tort Law (Acing Law School) for a conceptual overview. Then I used Emanuel Law Outlines: Torts for an overview of the assigned material. Then I did the assigned reading, which was much easier with Emanuel Law Outlines: Torts keyed to Prosser, 11e because it is keyed to the casebook (switched to this halfway through 1st semester). Next I took brief notes to work out an outline for the steps used to analyze fact patterns. Here, Acing Torts is particularly helpful because it has a great checklist (see my review because it is arranged oddly in the book). Last I scanned the relevant chapter in Abraham to get policy for my notes. The key with this book was understanding why Courts created a law or why they decide certain ways in a case. If in a policy based class this book is essential. After class I quickly ran through my notes and organized them a bit into a rough outline (10-15 mins). Then on the weekend I would work on hypos she gave and use The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Third Edition to work through more confusing topics and practice writing hypos.By 2nd semester I used the Understanding book less and less because I picked up on the material quicker. I relied heavily on Acing Torts and Emanuel (using Abraham for bits of great policy arguments). These books collectively were not necessary, but they helped. If short on cash, the books from most helpful to least are your required casebook, Emanuel (especially if keyed), Acing Torts, Understanding Torts (1st semester and half of 2nd), E&E, and this book. However, some prefer E&E for explanation over Understanding. Last, is Crunchtime (this includes only portions of the full outline). Also, I have used Siegel's Torts: Essay and Multiple-Choice Questions and Answers from the library for practice in other classes, which may be preferable for many people.See my other reviews regarding the above books mentioned. However, only the first couple paragraphs will be different.Good Luck, I will try and answer any comments!
