This is a good message with some approachable long term ideas. But there are parts of the book that are the same-word for word. Chapter 4 isn't even a chapter, just half of chapter 3.

I always knew I had issues with codependence but to what extent I wasn't aware until reading this book. Thank goodness I found this book - Very enlightening and empowering! EVERYONE needs to read this. Take from it what you need...and there IS something for everyone!

Great book- not so fast shipping

The one I got is the first version; later versions are what's used in the contemporary groups I've found. Nevertheless, I think this is a very good introduction to what CODA is about. Over half the book is peoples' stories.

Just got back from Maui and bought this book and could not have been happier with my purchase. We stayed for 3 days in Hana and we used this religiously and found the authors to be spot on with their recommendations. We ended up doing the road to Hana and then the other portion that the rental companies are not wild with you taking the rented vehicles on, but the locals told us was so beautiful and scenic. With 50+ miles to drive it is difficult (and unnecessary) to stop at every stop and see every waterfall that comes up. With this guide you are able to stop on the most breathtaking spots and those that are out of the way and worth it. We used this in conjuction with DK's top 10 Maui guide and these two small books had it all. Kudos to the authors on this, they helped make our anniversary trip special and maximized our time. Also, I would have to say that I was very much undecided on getting a Hana CD or this guide because though I am normally able to read in the car I thought it might be unable to do so due to all the turns. You take these turns extremely, and I do mean extremely slow, so if you can read in the car, it won't be a problem, to occasionally glance down to see what sight is coming up (unless of course you are the driver, in which case you need to just keep your eyes on the road). A very, very well done guide I would recommend for anyone traveling the road to Hana....a definite must see site for the deep raw beauty of East Maui...

Useful but not outstanding book. Followed this book on road to Hanna and it was misleading at times. Mileage data was not always correct. This road is very dangerous and that was not sufficiiently pointed out.You had better know a lot about Maui before you go trecking off with this book.

Most of the book is about the road to Hana and we aren't doing that. If you are then this book is great. I'll give it five stars because it's a great book. Just not exactly what I needed.

I love Maui. I have all the Maui guidebooks. I have property in Maui. So I had to get "Maui - Mile by Mile, 2nd edition, fully illustrated with over 150 photographs," with a nice glossy color cover.Helllllo... Once you get past the cover, all the pictures are black and white. To be more accurate, the pictures look like they came off a basement laser printer that's low on toner - complete with vertical stripes. Do you know what pictures of rainforests look like in black and white? Gray doormats. Sunsets look like the Hiroshima blast. Self-publishing is great, but shouldn't there be a disclaimer or something? Get Maui Revealed instead - Twice the information with color pictures.

This guidebook helped us find hikes our family enjoyed on a recent trip to Maui. On several occasions we made use of the Mile Marker locators for trailheads and parks that otherwise would have been difficult to find. Descriptions about the trails often enhanced our enjoyment or knowledge.A small size guidebook that was easy to pack in suitcase and have in the car.

Its a book about kali, i for once would like a book that has everything it needs to work out the details on a dvd included with it. A lot of downloading of other products other then Kali ~ to things that require a new set of creds at other sites.

This book is a value. I would say if one is serious about learning Kali Linux 2 and pen testing, go for it. There are some practical hands on tasks through out this book. I found it helpful to first read through them and then go back and preform them on my VM. I don't think I will doing any of this in the real world after learning about various cases of cyber crime and the punishments associated with them. It is nice (or scary) to understand how it all works and the possibilities of what can be done. A good understanding of Ruby, Perl, MySQL, Bash,...etc and various Linux OS commands would be helpful to know prior.

Great.

I bought this book for a friend who is a pilot. He enjoyed it.

I admire planes and pilots, normally enjoy reading about them. I subscribe to Smithsonian "Air and Space" magazine. But these stories are so lame, I could barely keep my eyes open. This book is in my opinion, unreadable.

This book gives you a great overview over a whole lot of great flying stories. After I finish reading this book, I will certainly get a hold of some of the books from which the excerpts in this book origin. It's a very pleasant read and I highly recommend it to anybody fascinated by aviation. Just one thing to keep in mind: Most of the stories date back some time, which gives them a bit of nostalgic touch.

It’s basically just a version of the original song. No storyline. I would return it but my baby likes some of the pictures. Only reason I’m keeping it and only reason I gave it two stars.

Like any other parent who's household is plagued with constant requests of "Baby Shark! Baby Shark! BABY SHARK!!!!" I thought this would be a great way to get my kiddo away from the screen and back to paper where I prefer them to be. I was disappointed at first to see the only for this was paperback, but meh, it's $6, let's give it a try. Well, that didn't last long, literally. The book unfortunately is made out of fairly thin paper, and it is especially too thin for the given demographic of Baby Shark. This needs a card stock/"Indestructibles" version. Also, and while I am sure this is for copyright reasons, the book is not the same as the forever ingrained lyrics of the song/video (Simple Songs for life!). This book is literally just the song lyrics with some cute pictures. No plot, no storyline. The illustrations are cute, so we'll probably keep it, but there is no substance whatsoever.

Very disappointing. This thin paperback book which i pre-ordered awhile back came in a giant box all by itself today, looks like it cost about $.50 to make... pages and cover thin and already wrinkled, it is just pictures with the song lyrics. Could have been so cute and well done.

My biggest complaint is that they omitted grandpa shark. I read it to my grandson and even be asks where is grandpa shark? It's also a very very thin book and tears easily. It looked like a sturdier cardboard more suitable for the age group of this material . Very dissapointed.

This was released right in the middle of the xmas Pink Fong version of baby shark explosion and sold out quick..It is thier own version of baby shark, but not the ones your kids are familiar with on youtube..Its cute and Im not planning to return it. We still read it but I have to change a few of the lines to keep my 2yo happy.

I'd never seen the noun "altruist" before reading the new novel, "The Altruists" by Andrew Ridker. According to the on-line dictionary, the word means "an unselfish person whose actions show concern for the welfare of others". That meaning seems to be the one Ridker is going for in telling the story of the Alter family of St Louis. Francine and Arthur are the parents, Ethan and Maggie are the grown children, and by the time the story opens, Francine has died of breast cancer and the other three family members are at extreme odds with each other. Each is mourning their loss alone and cannot comfort each other. The plot of the book is the weekend homecoming of the two children - each of whom had fled to New York City after their mother's death two years earlier. Their father asks them to return to St Louis to discuss their lives going forward. (The father also wants to ask them for money they received in their mother's will, that he did NOT receive.)There've been many novels and memoirs that cover adult-families-in-crisis. I recently read a novel called "Holy Lands", by British author Amanda Sthers, which covers the same territory but not as well. Ridker's characters are - for the most part - very well drawn. (I think the daughter - Maggie - is a bit of a caricature of the lost post-college girl, roaming around New York City, trying to "find herself"). Most of the story is set in St Louis, where the family had moved from Boston in the mid-1990's when Arthur Alter, a professor, was given a temporary job at "Danforth University". He assumed the job would turn into tenure-track, but it never did. As the years passed, his teaching load was reduced, as was his income and Francine really supported the family with her psychologist practice. (By the way, "Danforth University" seems to be Washington University. Ridker changes the name of the university but keeps all the St Louis and University City landmarks under their right names).But life in St Louis doesn't go well for the family. They are unable to function as a family long before Francine's death. I pictured them as solos, wandering around their large house, never coming to terms with themselves, or each other. All wounded in their own way. (Picture a family of Jewish "Royal Tennenbaums" and you'll get what Andrew Ridker is trying to draw here). But the family members - particularly the kids - are aware enough to want to help others in the world. Even father Arthur had tried to better society by going to Zimbabwe as a young man to make "clean latrines" for villagers. And this is where "altruists" shows up in the book, because the Alters may not know their own place in their own world, but are honestly trying to do things to help others outside it. Maybe the Hebrew expression "tikkun olam" is the verb of the noun "altruist" as they're very similar in meaning.Andrew Ridker has written a beautiful book about a family that the reader can really root for. The ending of the book is a bit strange, but is actually what it should be. I really can recommend "The Altruists".

A deeply moving, relatable, and real story shot through with world-class satire; can think of few books that so seamlessly accomplish this feat. Also doesn't hurt that, on a sentence to sentence level, it's phenomenally well-written. One of my favorite reads of the last few years; don't miss out.

A slightly different take on the dysfunctional family novel. Francine died and left money her husband Arthur didn't know about to their children, Maggie and Ethan. Arthur really really needs cash to keep his house so he gins up a rather ill conceived plot to get them home and make them love one another again - and give him a share. As you can imagine, things don't go quite as planned because Ethan and Maggie have their own issues, both with their family and with themselves. Only the privileged can behave the way this family does (Maggie's self flagellation got to be a little too much) and that might be the one tiny fly in the ointment of this otherwise nicely plotted debut. It's well written and the characters, while at times deeply annoying, are also realistic. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.

The Altruists by Andrew Ridker is a very highly recommended debut novel about a dysfunctional family struggling after the death of their wife and mother.Arthur Alter relocated his family, wife Francine and children Ethan and Maggie, from Boston to St. Louis after accepting the non-tenured position of engineering professor at Danforth University in St. Louis. While he was sure he would eventually become a tenured professor, it never happened. Francine is the person who keeps the family together and it is her income, as a family and couples therapist, that helps supports the family and pay for the mortgage on the large house Arthur wanted.Francine died from cancer two years earlier and left her children a large inheritance - money Arthur knew nothing about. Ethan and Maggie are still reeling from the death of their mother and haven't seen their father since. Arthur started an affair with a much younger professor while Francine was dying, an affair Francine, Ethan, and Maggie all knew about. Now Ethan and Maggie are both currently living in New York City. Maggie is a recent college graduate. She is striving to do good things for her neighbors and lives a life of self-imposed poverty, to the point of starving herself. Ethan, 31, left his consulting job, is a recluse and was living off his inheritance, but is now deep in debt. His father never understood him.Now, after not talking to his children for two years, Arthur, 65, has a scheme he needs to put into action that involves the help of his children. Arthur is going to lose the house to foreclosure because he can't afford the mortgage, but if he can get his children to use their inheritance to pay off the mortgage, then he and his girlfriend can move into the house. To put his plan into action, he writes to Ethan and Maggie, inviting them to come home for a visit, but his ploy doesn't go exactly as he planned.These are all memorable characters and readers will become well-acquainted with Francine, Arthur, Ethan, and Maggie. Francine is clearly the glue that holds this novel (and family) together. Without her, everyone is self-involved and clueless. There are moments where their actions or Arthur's obvious schemes to play on sentiments are so off-the-mark or awkward, that it is both humorous and yet poignant. Ridker succeeds in presenting the narrative with wit, compassion, insight, and depth, making these flawed characters human.The Altruists is an exceptionally well-written family saga. This outstanding, complex, and compelling novel is a page-turner that will hold your attention throughout. Both the quality of the writing and the character development are excellent, resulting in a intricate, dynamic, insightful, and perceptive debut novel.
