Allan C. Ornstein is a professor of education at St. John’s University. He is a former Fulbright Hayes Scholar and has been a consultant for more than 60 different government and education agencies, including the American Federation of Teachers, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Educational Testing Service. Dr. Ornstein has published more than 400 articles and 60 books. His latest books are Wealth vs. Work: How 1% Victimize 99% (Author House, 2012) and Excellence vs. Equality: Can Society Achieve Both Goals? (Paradigm Publishers, 2015). Hunkins was a professor of education specializing in general curriculum, curriculum development, curriculum issues, and curriculum theory in the College of Education at the University of Washington for 35 years. Since retiring, Dr. Hunkins has remained active in writing educational textbooks. As a past president, he also remains active in the Association for Teaching and Curriculum. During his tenure at the University of Washington, Dr. Hunkins served as chairperson of the area of curriculum and instruction (1995–2000). I had to get this for a masters-level education class. I found the first two-thirds or so of the book to be informative and well-written. The last third, however, honestly seemed to be written by a different person. The tone changed dramatically from informative and unbiased, to undeniably, openly doctrinaire. Additionally, the usage and grammar are glaringly poor in the last third. The language usage and word choice sound like those of a very poor writer who is attempting to cover the fact with a ridiculously flowery style. When you are quoting an author with whom you agree in order to confirm your point, please don't write that " 'Haney and Brown' PURPORT that .....!", for example. Sheesh. All that made the reading incredibly distracting. I am just glad that I only rented the book rather than purchasing it.

I rented this textbook as a coursework requirement for one of my Master's courses, and I expected it to be dry and cumbersome. Instead, I found that even though the text is dense, the information this book contains is phenomenal for anyone who wants to know what drives today's educational system. As a professional in the field of working with children with autism, I now have a much greater appreciation for what goes into curriculum.Not only that, but as a parent, I am suddenly completely aware and educated in regards to my kids' school's curriculum initiatives. Before reading this textbook, I felt like I wanted to be involved with my kids' education, but I didn't know how. Now, when the district comes out with announcements on "formative assessments," I know exactly what they're talking about, and I'm keenly interested in knowing how my children are performing against what the assessments say. Plus, when I attend board meetings, the jargon now all makes sense to me. (This, by the way, seems like a travesty to me. Parents should not need to be earning their Master's degrees in order to understand what their school boards are talking about.)Lastly, I mentioned that I rented this textbook. I now want to buy it. I had no idea that I would want to keep a book I originally assumed would be dry and useless. My incredible mistake. This textbook transformed my ability to be involved in my children's public education. Praise the Lord, and I mean that in all sincerity of heart.

This isn't about the content of the book, but a comment on the digital license. Long story short: Digital version will be fine if you intend to only use it on at most two devices. Otherwise, choose the devices you download this book to wisely.I was caught off guard since I've never had an issue using digital books on my devices (depending on circumstance, I can use 2 different laptops an iPad and iPhone).I was unable to use this book on both my iPhone and my iPad, but am able to use it on one mobile device and one PC.

I read this book along with Oliva's and it is quite thorough. Other readers would wonder why read both. They kind of cover the same ground. However, I like that Ornstein makes distinctions between philosophies and educational philosophies. This chapter is broader in scope. Likewise, his history on education in America seems to cover a greater ground. There is another chapter on social background which Oliva does not have. In his discussion on curericulum designs, he includes backward design curriculums, while Oliva doesn't. This is important to me as a reader because I am strongly influenced by backward design, and there are several authors covering this type of design (Erickson, 2003, 2007; and Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). A big distinction between these two books, however, is that Ornstein's tone is critical. Oliva's is objective, as a newsreporter who is describing what is going on. Ornstein's is editorial, as a person who voices his perspective and describes history with a critical eye. I thought that wwas inmportant to this textbook.

Overall a good textbook, however, it is missing many curriculum development topics and is a bit wordy in several areas. It certainly is useful, however, if this is the only curriculum textbook you are using, you will be missing a lot. Given I've taken other courses with other texts, this was fine. Wouldn't really recommend as a student or an educator.

I'm definitely learning a lot about curriculum design and its approaches and elements. Everything you need to know is right in this book! I would highly recommended it to academics who are seeking administrative leadership in a school district.

It looks not very good. Hope it will not broke during this semester.

Title: Creating Community: 5 Keys to Building a Small Group Culture by Andy Stanley and Bill WillitsPages: 190How it was obtained: I was given this book before I started leading a small group at a church in Columbia, SC. Obviously I didn't read it when I was supposed to read it.Time spent on the "to read" shelf: 4 years.Days spent reading it: 2 months.Why I read it: I was supposed to read it before I helped lead a small group. I felt bad about never having read it, so I added it to this list and completed my assignment years after it was originally given.Brief review: This book is a Northpoint Church resource that talks about how they created a small group environment at their church. I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I recognize how important community is in spiritual development. So I think there are a few helpful pointers in this book about how that is accomplished.But for the most part, this book really rehashes old business models and applies them to small groups. For instance one point of the book is "Clarify the win." Make sure you know what your end goal is. Gee, that sounds like Business class 101 to me. We need to know our goal to get there. I get it. Another section was about having reasonable criteria for small group leaders. Have quality leaders, but don't expect them to be perfect. Done.In another section of the book they talk about how they want to see their small groups multiplying. SO every 1.5 years the group splits, but also grows. The chart goes:Year/# of people0/121.5/243/484/96etc. etc.However they never explain how these groups magically grow (especially considering they are CLOSED groups). It was like they were saying:Step 1. Start small group.Step 2. Double in size in a year and a half.Step 3. Start new small group.It reminds me of the only episode I ever saw of Southpark with these underwear gnomes whose motto was: Phase 1--Steal underwear. Phase 2-- Phase 3--Profit!How do you do that? How do you double the small group size? I realize a church like Northpoint has new people coming and going all the time. But the old "if you build it they will come" mentality does not work for small groups in most churches, making this point practically worthless for those churches.And one more personal pet peeve. Andy Stanley's name is prominently on the front cover, but I would be shocked if he wrote anything besides the introduction that is about 5 pages long. If you write a book, put your name on the cover. If you write the intro you're not the author! You're the "With intro written by" guy. His name is on the cover because it is his church and it will help sell this book. That's annoying to me. We might as well grab John Grisham, make him write an intro and put his name on the front cover of any book we want to sell. Why not? Ok, enough ranting.So I did enjoy some of what is in this book. The opening chapters deal a lot with why people need a community they can fit into. There is a profound need in the human soul that needs community, and I think this book explores that need well. It gives us a glimpse of a biblical theology for small groups.There are a number of small points that are applicable to anyone working on developing or strengthening their small groups. But this is not a book about how to start, grow, and develop your small groups. It is a big picture book that is not particularly practical for smaller churches, in my opinion. Not that the ideas are bad or wrong, they just are not for general application. I was hoping for something more and simply did not get it. Good thing this book was reasonably short.Favorite quote: "Disconnected people tend to be more selfish. Isolation breeds selfishness."Stars: 2 out of 5Final Word: Disappointing.

About two months ago, I began the adventure of coordinating the small groups ministry at my church. I've been in small groups, I lead a small group with my wife, but outside of student ministries, I had never really coordinating a program like this before. I feel overwhelmed that I simply don't know enough or have enough experience. So I asked all my smarter, more experienced friends to tell me what they've read that can help me lay a good foundation for helping coordinate this really crucial ministry. A few of them mentioned Creating Community, and so I bought it for my e-reader. It was so good, it took me less than 24 hours to read. "We want them to grow in their intimacy with God, community with insiders, and influence with outsiders."For a while now, I have had a burden for a more intentional system for our small groups. We've had this system of scattered and dis-unified small groups for a while now, and there isn't a lot of clear direction. I feel just like Andy Stanley did early on in North Point's history. "We all sensed a need to bring a layer of structure and intentionality to our otherwise random and unstructured friendships" (pg. 12).The book is written primarily by Bill Willits, who is the director of the small groups at North Point Community Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He talks a lot about how they arrived at how they do groups now and how they thought strategically about how to grow it into a system that moves people toward a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and with each other. This combination of real-life scenario and theoretical practice is extremely insightful and challenging.Creating Community is orderly, succinct and thorough; a combination you don't find in many "how-to-ministry" books. It has challenged many of my preconceived notions of what community looks like in the church and how to best foster really meaningful relationships in those communities. If your heart is to help create communities that create real life change in people, than Creating Community is simply a must-read.

This is a wonderful book about creating a community, and not necessarily in church. It's so easy to just go to church and follow the motions without ever REALLY becoming connected. Creating a community inside the church is what God intended for us to do. In order to work together effectively, you need to know that you can rely on your church family and be able to trust and confide in them. It takes work; it's not something that just happens. This book leads you deeper on how to allow that to happen. My husband purchased this book when we were hosting small groups at our house and we had the best session that we'd ever had (and we hosted groups for SEVERAL sessions prior to this). People opened up and told their testimonies and it was because there are tips on how to break the ice and make it easier to open up. No one wants to open up and become vulnerable in a group of people they don't really know, but it's almost necessary. We highly recommend this book if you currently lead, are thinking about leading or are starting to put small groups together. Together they performed airplane acrobatics as Black Dove (Delia) and White Raven (Rhoda) and raised their children alone—until the day Delia died from a bird strike. But she and Rhoda had a dream: to go live in Ethiopia, where Delia and her son Teo would live a life without the segregation rampant in the United States in the 1920s; Rhoda was still determined to make that dream come true, and eventually it did. But the little family of three—Rhoda, daughter Emilia, and Teo—are about to lose their happy life when the Italians advance on Ethiopia.Taking place mainly in the 1930s, and told alternately by Em, Teo, and through their fictional Black Dove/White Raven stories in which the fears emerging in their lives take fictional form, this appealing adventure story follows Em and Teo from their earliest memories to the "now" of the threat of Italian invasion, where Rhoda fights for their home and Teo learns a horrifying secret about his father that affects his future. Both children learn to fly from Rhoda, but while Teo is a natural pilot, Em struggles with each flight, until a crisis forces her to face her fears.Wein paints a lovely portrait of pre-invasion Ethiopia, where modern medicine and respect for native culture co-exist, and of the bond shared by Delia and Rhoda that lasts beyond death and the friendship of Emilia and Teo. Rhoda's unconventional Quaker family is also a compelling factor in the opening chapters of the book. The landscapes are lovingly drawn and, as always in a Wein novel, the magic and majesty of flying has a prominent role. While the situation may not be quite as compelling as CODE NAME VERITY, the characters and setting are unforgettable.

This historical novel for young adult readers is a remarkable achievement. First of all, the novel has a great plot. It is set in Ethiopia during the Italian-Ethiopian war of 1935-1936, which in East Africa ushered in World War II. Its main characters are two teenagers, both children of American mothers who earned a living as stunt pilots after World War I and married foreign husbands. Emilia (or Em) is the daughter of a white mother from Pennsylvania (Rhoda or “White Raven”) and an Italian aviator father, while Teodros (or Teo) is the orphaned son of an African American mother (Delia or “Black Dove”) and an Ethiopian expatriate father. Rhoda is heart-broken when Delia dies in a plane-crash caused by hitting a swarm of birds. After several years of emotional paralysis, she decides to honor the plans she and Delia had made before the latter’s death and moves her family, now including both Em and Teo, to a clinic in a rural village in Ethiopia. They arrive on the eve of Mussolini’s invasion, just as Emperor Haile Selassie begins to prepare for war by drafting Ethiopian men into his army. Em’s Italian father is a pilot on the Italian side. Teo, as the son of an Ethiopian father, is drafted on the Ethiopian side, even if for a very special and unexpected mission. In her attempt to save her children, Rhoda teaches both of them to fly, thus confirming the roles Teo and Em had already adopted in their fantasy life – those of the newly embodied “Black Dove” and “White Raven.”The second remarkable feature of this novel is that all its major characters are beautifully and imaginatively drawn. Em and Teo, as non-traditional siblings and creative soul mates, come fully alive, Teo as the super-smart, quiet, reflective boy, who can make himself almost invisible, and Em as the impetuous and flamboyant girl, exceptionally gifted in her own tomboyish ways. Even in the midst of the most unlikely events, Teo and Em’s characters make full emotional sense to the reader. The friendship between Rhoda and Delia, whose spirit is an inspiration to all of them, is mirrored in that between Em and Teo, giving both relationships extra depth and power. The novel’s other characters include Rhoda’s close Ethiopian friend Sindiku, a nurse who cares for the victims of Italian mustard gas bombs; the old Ethiopian priest Habte Sadek, keeper of some of the most sacred Ethiopian objects of devotion, and the flamboyant African American pilot in Haile Selassie’s service, Horatio Augustus (based on the person of Hubert Julian, who in real life indeed crashed the Emperor’s private plane in a rehearsal of the coronation ceremony).Wein’s story and characters reveal the destructive power of institutional racism (differently configured, of course) in both the U.S. and Ethiopia, as well as that of colonial aggression and occupation. Individuals cannot fully escape such structures of inequality, Wein’s story suggests. However, they are, at the same time, not fully determined by them and their choices and actions make a real difference resisting and overcoming injustice. This, together with the taken-for-granted, enjoyable, feminism of the characters, makes this an uplifting story.The novel’s form is a third remarkable feature of this novel, for it allows Em and Teo to tell the whole story through their own writings and in their own voices. These writings include compositions written as homework for their homeschool teacher in Ethiopia and, later, for Em’s mother; diary-like flight logs of their training as pilots, and even fantasy adventure stories (fiction within fiction) in which Teo and Em imagine themselves as the heroic protagonists “Black Dove” and “White Raven.” These fantasy stories, including, for example, “Episode from ‘The Land of Glass,’” (pp. 222-223), and are so imaginative, whimsical, and rich in metaphor that one could love this novel for them alone.Finally, the image of Ethiopia that emerges from Teo and Em’s descriptions is stunning and rich. The reader can smell the warm, dusty, and smoky air of Addis Ababa by night as the two teenagers walk through the city on their way to Teo’s uncle; and we can see the flat and bare mountain tops, the green and fertile valleys, and the isolated mountain monasteries, as the two young pilots fly their small plane high above it all. Like the Ethiopian landscape, Ethiopian characters such as the bodyguard of a feudal lord, the Ethiopian staff of a small rural clinic, the abbot of a monastery built into a set of caves, the feudal lord in a mountain stronghold, and the Emperor himself, are beautifully and respectfully drawn with a sharp eye for the concrete and the everyday as they impact senses and sentiment.This reviewer found the form of book’s beginning (respectively, a flight log including a letter to Emperor Haile Selassie by Em, a brief episode of an imaginary adventure story by Teo, and a homework composition by Em) structurally too complex and somewhat off-putting. This might discourage any reader, let alone a young one. I think my favorite part of this book was how rich the historical setting and details are. Evidence of how hard the author worked to get things right are seen throughout the entire book. She brings to life a part of the WWII era not often explored, in fiction or otherwise, the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and how WWII impacted this part of the world. She also brings to life a culture that is unique, colorful, and different than any Westerners are used to. She definitely transports her readers in every way, the hallmark of a great historical fiction writer.I also really enjoyed her characters; all are different and exceptional. Steady Teo, intrepid Em, and protective Rhoda all make their mark on the reader’s hearts. Even Delia has a strong presence, even though she was dead for most the book. She serves as a motivation and driver for the book after that event due to her strong personality early on. The secondary characters also exhibit their own personality traits and quirks, making them remarkable and remember-able to the reader long after reading.The format of the story was different than I’ve seen used before, but then, I’ve grown to expect that from this author. The story is told in a combination of letters, memories, flight logs, and fictional stories written by Teo and Em. I liked how this gave the story a distinctive feel and flow. The only part I wasn’t that thrilled with was the fictional story parts. As they were written by children, of course their tone and content will be way different than the flight logs and such. But I found myself thrown out of the story more than once trying to digest these pieces in the middle of the others.Overall, this is a great book looking at a part of WWII that isn’t often explored in WWII literature. Great characters and historical details make this an engrossing read and puts the story into the reader’s hearts hard. The unique format works in most places but not as well in others. Still definitely a book to look at and recommend to lovers of the genre. Another great example of this author’s work as well.

If you have taken a basic Statistics class in college or grad school, this book is not for you. While the authors try to make it engaging, in practice it is basic and provides little information. However, lawyers with no statistical training whatsoever might find it useful.

I had to get this book for Quantitative Analysis for Lawyers course. It starts out as an easy read, but quickly gets difficult and doesn't provide many examples (or sample problems to work through). I found it very difficult to follow the equations when I didn't get the opportunity to work through sample problems. Ultimately, that slowed down my learning significantly and forced me to find supplemental reading to get caught up.
