This is a good book for anyone who hasn't followed the health field. I have to admit I was a little disappointed. Much of what the author said seemed to be obvious to me, but I have always been interested in health and nutrition and at one time was subscribing to a half dozen university newsletters. The other disappointment was that there were no footnotes. In particular I was looking for one where she was discussing vitamin C. She stated in an offhand comment that vitamin C could increase bleeding risk, and I was under the impression it helped strengthen capillary walls. There was no further mention of that, and I wanted to be referred to a study. Other people might want to be referred to other studies. Having a list of references at the back of the book seemed inadequate to me. I took off a star for the lack of footnotes, but many people won't mind.

This provided very general answers, and left me feeling frustrated. For example, the author says that too much exercise can be a bad thing. Sounds reasonable, and I’m all ears. But that’s really all the book says on the topic. No explanation of how much is too much, what signs to look for, the consequences, etc. Over and over, the author says that the answer depends. Ok, probably true. But tell us more.

I am a family physician practicing at a large academic center and everyday I am faced with patients conducting their own research... some valid and other claims are just outright bizarre. Dr Shapiro not only has an exceptional professional reputation but her writing is clear, easy to understand and informative without being judgemental. I have purchased copies for my waiting room and hopefully this will help enlighten others about the crazy medical world we live in.

Not ten minutes into reading HYPE, I wanted to stand up and CHEER. THANK YOU, Dr. Shapiro, for taking the time, energy, dedication and effort to put into writing what so many of us in primary care spend ALL DAY sharing with our patients! Obviously our 15-30 minute visits contain a small fraction of the info in this book, which is why I'm telling you PLEASE buy and read and learn from this fabulous collection of myth-busting medical TRUTHS. My biggest frustration with social media is that all voices seem equal...or maybe just the LOUDEST voices seem the "best", but in reality, a google search does not equal years of research nor practice. Please everyone, QUESTION what you hear. Do not take advice from your friend, or Facebook or a website as gospel truth. The "facts" are NOT equal. Evidence-based medicine is teaching ALL of us that not everything we do has equal outcomes. Just because we've always used cough syrup to treat coughs doesn't mean it is effective shortening the course of a cold, and we don't need antibiotics every time snot is green. Treat yourself to some REAL medical information that will help YOU to sort through all the HYPE. Thank you, Dr. Shapiro! I'd love to meet you some day, but for now, please accept my virtual HIGH FIVE for this wonderful book!

After reading "The Gathering," I ordered three other books by the astonishingly gifted Anne Enright, who knows all about women. One of these was "The Pleasure of Eliza Lynch." Her sometime protagonist, Eliza Lynch, a "fallen" woman who knows a good thing when she sees it, falls stone in love with a customer slated to become the next ruler of Paraguay. The first sentence of the book verges on porn, but it is one of Enright's many talents that she can mix the crude with the romantic and maintain a high level of curiosity. She has a knack of clearly distinguishing each character while not choosing sides; that is, the reader sees all the human, and in some cases inhuman, flaws in the souls that people her books. Her style may be found "jumpy" by some, as she creates flashbacks and flash forwards, and speaks in various voices, but stay with it and you'll be rewarded by mysteries solved, history revealed and enough red herrings left over to make you think and comjecture. Her knowledge of humanity is profound and she knows how to outline the attitudes of men toward women and of women toward themselves at their most primitive level. I finished this in one all-night session.

Unrecognisable from Ms Enright's other works, this is written very much in the dreamlike style of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.The chronology is fluid: the account of Irishwoman Eliza Lynch's journey into Paraguay, in the company of her lover, Francisco Solano Lopez - son and heir to the dictator - is interspersed with other chapters from later in her career, most notably the War of the Triple Alliance, with its massive casualties.Although parts of the narrative are in Eliza's own words, she remained quite an enigma. Was she worthy of the scorn poured upon her by the Paraguayan ladies as an 'Irish whore'? Was she as responsible as her fearsome husband (who was prone to killing his own men) for the bloodshed? Or a brave and noble woman?A much clearer character was Doctor Stewart, physician to the family and sometime narrator.Ms Enright notes that this is all fiction: 'this Is Not True', and I see another reviewer more knowledgable about Eliza Lynch finds fault with the novel for the spin she has put on Lynch. I would say that as someone with absolutely no prior knowledge of Paraguayan history, this work has massively stirred my interest in the subject, and I plan to read a biography of this lady sometime.

I had already read Lily Tuck's wonderful novel about Eliza Lynch, The News from Paraguay, when I found Ann Enright's The pleasures of Eliza Lynch in my local library. Enright is a poet and accomplishes much of what Tuck does but in a far more flowing and poetic manner. If you enjoy well written novels with complex characters and incomparable descriptions of place, this novel is highly recommended. There is nothing about Enright's novel that smacks of "pulp fiction" which another reviewer has unfairly stated above.Indeed, I am awed by the skill and truth with which she writes about sexuality. This is no Fifty Shades of Gray. The pleasures of Eliza Lynch offers readers some of the most vivid and honest depictions of sexuality I have ever read. Nor is it a difficult read. If I read sentences, paragraphs, and in one case, a chapter, several times, it was not because I did not understand but rather because I wanted the pleasure of reading it again and again. I also enjoyed The Forgotten Waltz, Enright's most recent novel, and her short story collection. I consider Enright one of the most important authors at work today. This novel, however, is quite different than Enright's other books.I cannot recommend it highly enough and am astonished at how very little attention it has gotten. I thought The Gathering was a very fine novel, but it is in no way as vivid, memorable and moving as The Pleasures of Eliza Lynch. Eileen P.

I had read a recent(and somewhat misogynist)biography of this woman, the Irish courtesan Eliza Lynch, before starting this book. The author of this novel, Anne Enright, seems to have her history right: Lynch met the Paraguayan dictator Lopez in Paris and became pregnant by him before returning with him to Paraguay. There, she was reviled by high and low, probably because she was considered shameless (she did not hide her relationship with Lopez), tried to bring Parisian "culture" to this backwater, helped herself to the country's wealth (it was rich in yerba maté) and encouraged Lopez in his grandiose ambitions, resulting in simultaneous war with Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina; a war that killed tens of thouands, saw the country's wealth destroyed and Lopez himself lose his life. Historic sources say that Lynch not only did nothing to restrain Lopez's brutality, but even added to it by seeking revenge against those among Paraguayan society (such as Lopez's family) who disdained her.Enright, writing in the third and first person (Lynch herself), brings this story to life vividly, especially in describing Lynch's first trip upriver to Asunción. Her language is colourful and evocative. The story, still sticking to history, ends with Lynch, having survived Lopez, Paraguay and the war, now in the UK and seeking damages against one of the few Europeans, a Scottish doctor named Stewart, who had remained loyal to her and her husband. History, and even this book, paints her as unsympathetic, but so seems everyone (including those who loathed her) in this sordid, brutal bit of history.

My husband purchased this book to help him study for his exam. He said most sections were pretty helpful. However, he bought this mainly for the math sections. He asked me for help on some of the problems since I am a math major and he did not understand the solutions provided. However, at least two of the problems I noticed solve the problem a very difficult way. I had to show him a much simpler way to solve it. I also noticed that on one problem all the multiple choice answers are incorrect.

Passed the written exam like a God. Though it is printed in 2011. This book still has relevant info to get you prepared for the process. 10 out of 10 would buy again.

This book doesn't help, just a big book on the police entrance process etc.....awful.

I aced the test so this certainly helped. Sat down and read through everything the night before. The practice test was particularly helpful - math problems were spot on.

Used for Law Enforcement Explorer Training for competition.

Great for Nypd test, but it's not so good if you're taking a Texas test.

This collection of Linda Gregg's poems is just fantastic.

Linda writes like she's trying to write a great poem in an age when most poets just want to churn out poem after poem like poetry is a nine to five job. Buy this book.

This is a collection everyone should own.

I ordered this book when I read one of Linda Gregg's poems on the Writers' Almanac. I think she is a superior poet, so much to learn from reading her work.

I have been reading books of poetry that won awards from the Academy of American Poets and this is the first one I felt the need to write a negative review for. I found the poems shallow, generally uninteresting, and uninspiring.

Good Lord. I don't typically write reviews, but after checking this book out from the library and finding myself returning to it day after day, I came here to buy my own copy. That's when I saw the one lonely review is a terribly negative insider take-down.I beg to differ.Gregg's writing makes this old world new, with energetic phrasing and a simplicity of form that is easy to appreciate, difficult to create.And this collection combines her very best and more than twenty new.Google her name, read some of her poems online, then decide for yourself. As for me, I am grateful for her words.

Brilliant book. She writes honestly, with no posturing. Her work is subtle, exquisite.

Gregg's work has been from the beginning consistently timid, cramped and imitative, characterized by a failure to believe in her own voice, stand on her own feet, or take any chances.I always wanted to believe that she is capable of more, but with this collection I guess it's time to give up. I guess she really wants to be a Jack Gilbert sock puppet. Maybe this is what she can do. It's sad and very hard to respect.

Brian Hall has written the best book I know (and I have several) on this challenging topic. The concepts are easy, but the number of different kinds of things one needs to remember to master this topic, to apply it, and to do calculations with it is large. Hall takes the time to spell out the structure and relationships that make remembering the "zoo" much easier, at least for me. If you're inclined to remember things by their structure and relationships (as opposed to their mere taxonomy), then you will get a lot out of this book.

This book is very well introduction to this topic because have a minimal prerequisites. For example Part 1 using only Linear algebra. Furthermore, in Part 1 Hall explains matrix Lie groups with many examples and some geometrical-physical interpretations. I recommend this book for both mathematicians and physicists.

I used this text last year for a third year undergraduate course on Lie groups, Lie algebras and representations and it was excellent! I found the exposition to be super clear and easy to follow. Also, I really loved an entire chapter that focused on the representation theory of $\mathfrak{sl}_3(\Bbb{C})$! As I grow older, I discover more and more the importance of having a concrete grasp of examples - and Brian's book does it in exactly that way. Plus, it is not disorganized and does not handwave like Fulton and Harris (which has gaps in its proofs using Weight diagrams in the chapter on representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$) and is not dry and abstract like Humphreys' book!I would say that this is the best book out there to start learning Lie theory from.

Great book and service!

I love this book. I like to think I am a good mathematician, but I have always had a lot of trouble with differential geometry. I suspect there are a lot of people out there like me. This book presents Lie Groups using matrix groups, which makes things much more concrete. The book is not easy, and requires good linear algebra skills. However, many matrix algebra theorems are presented and proved in the appendices. The appendices also include the abstract definitions of Lie groups and algebras for general manifolds which are topological groups, with examples, and the author always explains how the theorems for matrix groups relate to those for general Lie groups, and in many cases little modification seems to be necessary.There are plenty of exercises at the end of each chapter that are of just the right difficulty to help you understand the material.I got the first edition, since the second edition seems to be available only in paperback and I prefer hardcover. There seem to be a lot of typos in the first edition that are easy to spot. I imagine they have been corrected in the second edition. I don't know what other changes were made.Some people who reviewed this book complained that it does not fully reveal the pristine beauty of general Lie groups. This may be true, but a book that I cannot read is not going to do me any good. Also, many people who use Lie Groups only really need matrix groups and this may be a good book for them.

[EDITED 2012: This review used to contain information about the (unreadable) Kindle edition of this book. I removed that information after the publisher, wisely, stopped offering the Kindle edition.]As a graduate student, I love this book. It requires surprisingly little familiarity with topology and algebra; I could have taken this course in my first year without being taxed by prerequisites. Its focus on specific examples, such as SU(2) and SO(3), match well with the situations in which I have previously encountered Lie groups outside of the course. The extensive discussion of examples also helps me to structure the big picture in my head, in that I feel more confident asserting why we take an interest in, for example, the connectedness of a Lie group. Hall's discussion of the behavior of, and topological properties of, the most commonly encountered Lie groups is superb. The writing clarifies which details I ought to work out on my own as I read (which is another reason I would have been able to take this course in my first year, when my skill at actively reading and engaging with upper-level textbooks was still budding).I don't know if this book is useful as a reference text for individuals who have a research interest in algebraic topology. I doubt it's extensive enough. However, as a learning text for physicists and mathematicians whose main research interest lies in analysis or PDE, this book has proven very satisfactory. Future authors of textbooks might also skim through it to discover an excellent example of how to connect with a competent student audience and guide them into an unfamiliar topic without obscuring its purpose.Also worth recommending here, specifically as a companion volume: the text Linearity, Symmetry, and Prediction in the Hydrogen Atom (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics) by Stephanie Frank Singer. I think an excellent and interesting first-year graduate course in mathematical physics could be constructed from Hall's and Singer's books.

IThis is the 2nd volume in Martha Wells’ “Murderbot Diaries”. It’s also the 2nd of my May New Releases – the first being “The Wolf: Under The Northern Sky” – which turned out to be a beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable book.I enjoyed “All Systems Red” – enough to convince me to buy the three sequels. The next book – “Rogue Protocol” – is scheduled for release in August of this year. Contrary to what I wrote in the first review, I did actually did buy all volumes in hardcover. Given what I know Wells is capable of – I guess I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and just assume that she’s going to do something special with this story.After reading this second book, I have to say…Murderbot is growing on me. I was right about the holes in “All Systems Red” – Wells is parsing out her backstory and is filling in the blanks as she goes. MB is becoming a more substantial and relate-able character as the story progresses. He’s growing and defining himself – starting to come to terms with his independence and deciding who he wants to be. Most of that growth is driven by his need to interact with a growing group of diverse individuals and the choices those interactions force on him. He obligates himself to a new group of humans – first via a contract he negotiates and then in response to a series of ethical choices that result from that contractual obligation. Those choices allow you to better understand MB, how he thinks about himself and how he feels about the humans who created him.Just as important are the relationships he forms with other machine intelligences. The first and most entertaining of these is the alliance or friendship or something in between that he forms with the Artificial Intelligence – ART – responsible for the operation of a Research Transport vessel that he uses to escape from the world of his first set of human patrons. ART is a surprise for MB – he’d assumed that this would be an uncommunicative machine intelligence. In fact, ART turns out to be as communicative and as richly complex as MB and their relationship transitions from arms length wary to mutually supportive and amusingly familiar. ART is arrogantly confident in his superior abilities but humanizes as a result of his interactions with MB. As the story progresses, they become an effective, entertaining, almost lovable team united partially by the boredom of their constrained lives in service to human beings that are – in many ways – far less capable than either of them.Long to short – this story is becoming increasingly interesting and entertaining. I actually enjoyed “Artificial Condition” more than I did “All Systems Red”. It was richer, more complex and it finally allowed me to connect in a more meaningful way to MB. I can’t help but think that I’m going to really wind up liking this guy as the story progresses.I honestly have only one complaint and it has nothing to do with the book itself. I don’t like the way Martha Wells and the publisher are commercializing the work – hence the Razor / Blades quote. The story is being sold as 4 separate novellas:All Systems Red – 2017Artificial Condition – May 2018Rogue Protocol – August 2018Exit Strategy – October 2018They’re sold separately as hardcovers at the price of $16.19 and as e-copies for $9.99. In reality, these are 4 sections of one book – obvious as you read through each separately – and could easily have been published in one volume. The fact that they were all released within an 18 month period only confirms that the Author and the publisher made a pretty crass commercial decision to break the book into four pieces and sell them separately to maximize revenue.Instead of paying $25 for a single hardcover volume, I’m forced to purchase 4 separate novellas for a combined cost of ~$68.00 in hardcover or ~$40.00 in digital format. Before you say it, I will – shame on me – no one forced me to spend the money – I know I’m being played. Nevertheless, I’m really enjoying the books and I want to get my hands on them as they become available. It just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and it makes me wonder about Wells’ attitude towards her fans and readers. Wells and her publisher gave me the Razor but she’s selling me the blades – one at a time – at a pretty high price.My recommendation – wait until an omnibus edition is published and just read it straight through. You’ll enjoy the story AND you won’t feel like you’re being exploited. I wish I was able to take my own advice. 🙁

This story is way too short for the price. I want to read the next one but I certainly am not going to shell out $10 for a novella.

Like so many others, I fell for the first Murderbot book and gleefully awaited the series' return. What a disappointment. This novella reads like a mere chapter in a longer book. The plot is paper-thin, the characters cardboard cutouts, and the writing is serviceable at best. At worst, the prose is hugely repetitive and bland. I paid $10 for the Kindle edition of the book and it took me less than two hours to read it. And now the publisher wants me to pay another $20 for the next two installments. I can abide by reading a poorly written book (it's not even a book, really, but a short story) but I hate getting ripped off.

Murderbot continues to be entertaining, though this installment doesn’t cohere as well as the first, and I was under the impression I was getting a novel, not a novella for the price of a full book.

I enjoyed the first Murderbot book, and ordered Artifiial Condition assuming it would be a full length novel. For almost $10 I want more than a few pages. This is a neat little story, and Wells writes well. But come on - I feel ripped off

Charging $30 for a novel by breaking it up into 160 page segments and selling each novella at the price of a novel is ridiculous. I won't be buying the rest of the series. Currently the next two "books" in the series are on pre-order at $9.99 apiece and each at 160 pages.

This is the first time I have ever bothered to review a book, and I'm doing it solely because I am ticked off. I've been a big time Martha Wells fan since Death of the Necromancer. Prior to that, I stopped reading SciFi because most of it was pretty lame, but I became a huge fan and pretty much bought each of her books the day it was available, happily paying full price for the provided enjoyment. Then yesterday afternoon I started reading this book. Murderbot is a bit too traditional SciFi for me, but his quirkiness and the quality writing make up for it. I was getting into the book, having traveled to the coffee shop and settled into my favorite big squishy chair, when BAM!, the book ended? My initial thought was my Kindle was acting up, but no, this is a really short book. That's fine for $3.99, but for the ten bucks I paid I feel my loyalty has been taken advantage of. Now, I'll probably continue the series because I have a ton of love an respect for the author, but I do feel a bit betrayed. I'm retired and read like a fiend, so I need to get decent value. If this is the "new thing", then I'll probably have to find a new favorite author to love and respect.
