It was ten years ago when a friend of mine said to me 'Beauty is everything'. This idea had never crossed my mind. I knew my friend liked beautiful things, well, ok, some do some don't. Beauty is 'everything' seemed a little bit overrated to me. But ever since this little sentence sticked and kept returning to me. And over the years I discovered that beauty isn't someones hobby, but a fundamental element of every aspect of life itself. If you've never asked yourself the question why beauty might be 'everything', read Alan Moore's Do Design. The relevance of beauty reveals itself step by step and slowly. At first, it doesn't look like the book wants to convince you about anything. It's a storybook. You read the story of Mohammed Ali's (very short) poem, read about the origin of martial-arts form 'Aikido' and the story about how to keep a family farm in business. It's the diversity and abundance of the stories that builds to a point of understanding the role of beauty in life (personal- and business life). If you don't want to connect the dots yourself, the book gives you a helping hand by presenting practices and maxims. Design is the way to deliver beauty to your business and your life. Part of the structure of the book - design as a mindset, a process and a craft - creates enough texture to Do Design, or start doing it. It's a crazy world we live in. I may not have agreed entirely with some of his examples (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course) but was constantly under lining phrases and catch-words that resonated with me as I read along -"lean forward""beauty and utility""back yourself""commitment gives you freedom""keep the Utopian coast in your sights"Oh, and the book itself is beautiful. A handy size and weight. Bite size nuggets of information beautifully laid out - clear fonts, page layouts, typesetting, images, pagination, etc. It's about the spaces between the lines, to paraphrase Moore.Read it and you will not be disappointed.

This is by no means a lengthy textbook but every page is filled with deep insight from interesting anecdotes. A very nice inspirational read for designers. I really enjoyed reading it and will likely reread it when I want some quick inspiration.

Alan has delivered another really thoughtful, deep and personal book - his messages have given me a lot of food for thought over the last decade. Read this book!

Bales books are always full of great information. Really digs into some great strategy for playing daily fantasy football. Are you going to win a large field GPP every single night? Nope. But this book will definitely give you a better idea of what it takes to get there. I literally read the entire book in one sitting and still go back from time to time to reread different parts. You can't go wrong with Bales.

This book is frankly amazing. I enjoyed everything about it. The information is ACTIONABLE and laid out in clear and precise ways that are easy to understand. It is numbers driven but also includes the need for you to have an understanding of football. I really believe that this book will take me to the next level in my study each week to play Daily Fantasy Sports. There are so many good things in the book from the way it is laid out by position all the way to basically a summary of rules to follow at the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to separate him or herself from the herd which is critical if you hope to be successful at winning tournaments in DFS.I had joined Fantasy labs last year during football season and rejoined as i started to read this book because the book goes part and parcel with the website and it's almost limitless information. I love the improvements on the website for 2016 and now i really feel that i can get the most out of the site especially the unique and very important trends tools. By thoroughly reading this book and taking notes and the use of Fantasylabs i finally feel i can compete with those who have tons of time to study for DFS that i frankly don't have as someone who works 55-60 hours a week in my regular job. Because between the notes i took and Fantasylabs it has greatly reduced the amount of time i will need to dig for information each week.

Love Bales' writing. The concepts and thinking discussed in this book are applicable to more DFS sports then just football. If you are interested in reading about Fantasy sports at all, his collection should be on your list.

Always enjoy reading Bales's books. DFS player attempting to better myself and this book gets into a bunch of data and analysis that I had no idea existed. Definitely a must read for any DFS player. Actually no wait, please no one else read this book. I can't afford to lose to you in GPPs.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Bales balances stats with flexible, actionable advice for DFS players. I'm looking forward to implementing these strategies throughout the season. The first section on biases was particularly enlightening. Bottom line reading this book can only help you as a DFS player regardless of experience level.

For those wanting to get serious about NFL DFS. Great explanation on understanding the spread and player ownership. Get it.

The book was quite well thought out and offered fresh material from prior books in the series. Jonathan Bales is always pushing forward with foreword thinking ideas about life that just happen to be applicable to daily fantasy football.

For those interested in daily fantasy sports (DFS), Jonathan provides valuable insight into how biases affect player selection and ownership percentages. Worth the time if you want to improve your chances of winning.

Wonderful book. Loaded with useful information on how to collect, prep, wash, and spin dog hair. She even has an index of over a hundred dog breeds on how to use the hair from each. I wish I had this book years ago!

Amazingly soft spun into yarn. Softer and wake er than bunny angora. Good information.

My wife thought I had a screw loose when I suggested the idea.Now people don't believe I'm wearing a hat made with Newfy hair, but I can tell you my head has never been warmer in the dead of winter. Now I need to do something with all the Newfy hair that I am accumulating.

This is a great book for anyone that is interested in spinning hair from their dogs. It covers everything from start to finish. The only thing I disagreed with was the on the breed Chinese Cresteds - they aren't all hairless. The powder puff variety have full coats - believe me - I have some homespun yarn from mine!Lots to learn and fun book.

The book is older than I thought....some of the sources listed for spinners are no longer in business.There were too few actual knitting patterns in the book. It contained more information about preparing the dog hair than actually knitting with it.

As an on again off again fiber artist I found this book to be very informative as a review as well as adding to the knowledge I already had. If you enjoy knitting and love dogs spinning their hair into yarn is a fun thing to do. Don't have a dog? Contact a local groomer and request long, clean hair. It's free for the asking and the color, texture, and staple length is varied which makes for very unique yarns.

I TORE THROUGH THIS ONE! Not kidding, picked it up Friday night, finished Saturday night. I loved this story, I was worried it'd be the typical teenage drama stuff but no, this is very complex and jaw-dropping. With every page I'd be more and more interested in what happens next. Plus! I'm a big fellow. 5'10", a few extra pounds. My students say I'm intimidating, which to me is a scream. My favorite genre is murder mysteries. As such, I have no idea what drew me to this book.I'll tell you a secret. I have moments where, for some reason, I am reminded of some mind numbingly stupid or embarrassing thing I did or said years--decades--ago, and the self-mortification paralyzes me. I squeeze my eyes shut and wish I could go back in time, and with my adult perspective inside my youthful mind and body, fix things. I know I cannot, and maybe THAT is how I ended up downloading this book and reading it in my spare evenings over less than three days.It's about Sam (Samantha Emily) Kingston, one of a quartet of popular high school girls, each of them shallower than a puddle after a light drizzle. With each awakening, Sam gets the feeling that there are wrongs that she must correct, but she is never sure of what those wrongs are. Something new and unexpected happens each time, giving Sam a glimpse of a much better self than she had ever aspired to before.The book's air of verisimilitude is astounding. I teach students fresh out of high school, and the author's re-creation of high-school sounding dialogue is spot on. Big lug though I may be, I came away from this book caring about people whom I would have gone a long way out of my way to avoid when I was this age. I'll be damned, but this story was profoundly moving, a genuine balm to anyone who has ever wished for a chance to set things right.

Actual rating 3.25 stars.I started reading this book a few times, abandoning it and returning before making any head way. All the immaturity, the teen girl snarkiness and bullying was just so tiresome. Plus the Groundhog styled repetition of the same day lagged the pacing.I didn't particularly like our protagonist Sam for most of the novel. She wears the moniker 'bitch' unapologetically and seems to pinball from one social scene to the next swaying under the banner of peer pressure and grasping to remain at the precipice of the social hierarchy. Then about halfway through the novel things changed. Sam became much more interesting, her choices became more altruistic. I laughed so hard in her 'rebellious' day it added a much needed punch to a novel I was starting to find boring.The supporting cast felt all very teen - wrapped up in their own dramas and self-importance. So the characterization was bang on, though I had little patience for their carry on. Sheesh I felt so old reading this book.It was a pretty easy writing style, a plain easy beat once the pace picked up, I flew through the second half of the novel. Though I did like the tone ‘Before I Fall’ set: it glances at repercussions of behaviour, atonement, bullying, suicide, depression, compassion, and acceptance. For such a wishy-washy teen babbling premise, it alludes to some much more serious issues.I'd recommend the novel to lovers of YA who don't mind a slow developing story. Plenty of drama and hijinks. Weird in some places, but the cyclical structure of the story resolves everything nicely. And like the proverbial light in the opening scene, you see it coming and there is nothing you can do to avoid it.It’s a fairly chunky and clunky book, it manages to redeem itself. The cover art captures an air of mystery with just a portion of the face lying on the ground… though I would have liked to see it in cooler colours with some snow to reflect the pivotal scene in the novel. The font was on the smaller side and there seemed to be a lot of italicised lines, but it captured the ambience really well and helped keep the page count down from a heavy wrist-aching book.I watched the movie shortly after completing the novel, and have to say I slightly enjoyed the cinematic version of this story more…

Fochs did incredible research to come up with this volume. I highly recommend this volume and its companions for any one who travels in Minnesota or is interested in its local history.

Anyone interested in ghost towns around the country would enjoy learning about some of those in Minnesota.

Our family is very happy with the book.

This book is good but didn't include info that I thought was going to be in there. Arrived in a timely fashion.

Stod in Otter Tail County had pictures taken ; maybe a few, not many. Would have been fun to have been added.Very good book but haven't fully read yet!

I've always considered A Time to Kill Grisham's most riveting and thought provoking work but this is it's equal The only criticism I have of the book is the same criticism I have of all his work. And that is his endings are always weak and disappointing. I always feel as though he just getstired of the story and writing and just stops. Every time I'm let down after really enjoying the read until it abruptly end and leaves me thinking, No, not again! (Kind of like how Charlie Brown feels when Lucy pulls the football trick.)

This is a sequel to one of Grisham's best, "A Time to Kill." Not necessarily a prerequisite - this books stands just fine on its own. picking up a few years later, lawyer Jake Brigance and his family still haven't recovered fully from the side-affects of the Hailey trial in the previous book. Once again we have a suspenseful plot with the same theme of whether racism and greed will overwhelm the outcome of a legal battle steeped in 1980's Mississippi. Grisham is definitely an expert story-teller with vivid characters and twists that keep you interested in what 'should' be a tedious and boring lawsuit over a hand-written will. A wonderful blend of comedy, tears, drama, suspense and gut-wrenching angst. Your opinion of the verdict sways back & forth but just when you think the outcome is obvious - guess again!If you haven't read "A Time to Kill" yet (or watched the movie), you might want to read it first, because it is equally good and this book will be a bit of spoiler.

John Grisham's original work was outstanding. He then fell off with less than impressive work - almost like he was rushing to meet a deadline. Case in point, The Associate which ended horribly leaving loose ends all over the place (and I've successfully forgotten the other failures). But with Sycamore Row, it seems Grisham's got his mojo back. It holds your attention by not revealing what 8 year old Ancil saw until the very end and the question that's the elephant in the room all through the book is why Hubbard left all that money to Lettie. About half to 3/4 into the book you start to figure out the why he left it. But not until the end do you realize the significant of why he hung himself. All these things become significant in the end and the book wraps up well. Basically couldn't put it down and am looking forward to JG's next novel. Hope it's not a bust!

SYCAMORE ROW by John Grisham is a fantastic read. The story takes place in a small town in the deep South in the late 1980s. It centers on the suicide of a crotchety but wealthy old man, Seth Hubbard. Hubbard leaves a handwritten will, legal in Mississippi, with very detailed instructions on how to dispose of his assets down to specific instructions dealing with his funeral and burial arrangements. In the will he leaves ninety percent of his very substantial estate to his black maid, Lettie Lang. The problem is that Hubbard had a legal document drawn up a year earlier by a large law firm in Memphis leaving most of his assets at the time to his two children and their families. In the handwritten will he specifies that nothing is to go to his children who he says have not bothered to visit him in years. The prime character in the story is Hubbard's lawyer, Jake Brigance, who never met Hubbard but whose job now is to administer his client's handwritten will. It is the trial of the century for the small Mississippi town with the colorful local judge, Reuben V. Atlee presiding. Sycamore Row is one of those Grisham novels that you cannot put down. John Grisham is one of the finest fiction writers of our time—he has proven it again with this writing. I give this outstanding novel a 5-star-plus rating.

Last novel I read from Mr. Grisham was The Rainmaker. This one was okay, but man it took a long time to get set up. Trial scenes take time, I understand, but it didn’t deliver the way it should have. Big storyline, broad stroke characterizations, and some antics thrown into the equation, but about a quarter of the way in you start seeing people who are getting more in the way of the story and you start to wonder when things will get streamlined. You could read far worse books, I guess, but I was a little disappointed in how little return I got for all the effort. I have great respect for Mr. Grisham and the story he tells is rich, it’s just not my kind of story. Maybe I’m more disappointed by the numerous high star reviews that influenced my purchase. Will be reading another of his books shortly since it helps pass the time on the exercycle.

John Grisham has done it again!Without question, this book is absolutely phenomenal! I typically don't write reviews; however, I'm compelled to share my opinion. The storyline so rich with vivid details, riveting characters, and humor that I found myself reading it for hours at a time. I laughed, cried, felt sorrow and joy as I read from chapter to the next.I highly recommend this book as an addition to your personal library.Thank you John!

After reading many books by self-published authors, this professionally written and edited novel was a reawakening as to why certain authors have earned the attention and respect of big name publishers. I admire the talent and intelligence of John Grisham to weave an amazing story and write a page-turner with such great ease and finesse. Well done! If you haven't read his work yet, I highly recommend that you do. Although some of his books have been made into movies, as they say, the books are always better.

John Grisham’s Book, Sycamore Row: A Novel is a must read. It touches so many old and current topics.A good trial is when you listen to one of the lawyers and think, “Of course, there’s the truth. He’ll win.” Then you listen to the next lawyer and think exactly the same thing.The characters are so well drawn that you feel for them all. Some you love and some you hate, but the ending will find you with tears in your eyes.
